A dashboard camera captured the last moments before the horrific accident involving a Pwani University bus along the Nairobi - Naivasha Highway in the Kayole area on Thursday, March 30 that killed 16 people.

The video seen by Viral Tea showed two matatus on their way to Naivasha before giving way to oncoming traffic comprising of a private vehicle and the university bus.

However, the bus was seen travelling at a high speed in the middle of the road and occupying both lanes, almost ramming the private vehicle from behind.

Here's the video:

The first matatu swerved to avoid colliding with the bus with the second bus doing the same but narrowly missing colliding into it, with the impact and the speed of the bus forcing the private vehicle to come to a stop.

The video triggered reactions on social media with some users recounting scenarios whereby they have been faced with heavy vehicles driving dangerously on country roads.

Others believed that the signs in the clip were evidence of the driver of the bus having lost brakes before the accident.

"So many times I have driven off the road despite being in my lane along Mombasa Road when faced with dangerously overtaking trucks and lorries. A few seconds of sobriety guarantees you years of health, safety and sanity," one tweep wrote.

"This bus definitely had already lost brakes. The driver has full lights ON and is clearly trying to avoid hitting the car in Infront from l behind. The Prado guy should have moved out of the way," another weighed in.

An eyewitness, who spoke to the media, intimated that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a matatu that was joining the main road after picking up a passenger along the highway.

"The bus driver hooted continuously, with the vehicle moving at high speed," she stated.

Another witness affirmed that the brakes of the bus failed due to a steep descent.

"The bus hit the matatu from the rare twice before it landed in a ditch by the road," he pointed out.

Pwani University Deputy Vice Chancellor James Kahindi further added that the buses packed with 120 students were heading to Nakuru before the tragedy occurred in Naivasha.

"The students left the school today morning and on reaching Naivasha, they had an accident. We have asked our chief security officer, who was in Nairobi on official duty, to go there and give us more information so we can inform the public. We are in Kilifi, relying on information from other people," Kahindi stated.

Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga sent his condolences to the Pwani University community and all those who lost colleagues, friends, and loved ones in the regrettable accident.

Kenya University Student Organization (KUSO) President Anthony Manyara paid a visit to the scene of the crash in Naivasha and confirmed through a statement on his Facebook page that the death toll has since climbed to 16.
