A pupil was among three people confirmed dead following an accident involving a school bus belonging to Kamiguru School and a lorry along the Meru-Nairobi Highway.

The school bus was ferrying the students to school on Friday, August 26 before it collided with the lorry at Ntharene market in Meru County.

Reports revealed that the school bus had collided with the lorry, veering off the road and eventually overturning into an adjacent cliff.

The pupil alongside the school driver and a pedestrian lost their lives while the injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Traffic built up along the highway as traffic police moved in quickly to restore normalcy along the busy road.

Police revealed that they were undertaking investigations to determine the cause of the accident. Drivers plying the road were warned to approach the scene with caution as police and rescue services moved to clear the wreckage.

Motorists were also warned to drive carefully and follow traffic regulations to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.

This is the second reported accident involving students. On Thursday, August 18, a female passenger was killed after a lorry rammed two Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and four private cars in Kambiti, along the Nairobi-Meru highway.

The lorry, according to reports, was ferrying beer to Sagana in the Mt Kenya region-based county when its brakes failed, causing it to lose control and hit six other vehicles.

The two PSVs were matatus from 2NK Sacco and they were carrying students to different schools.

The students from Nyeri high, Endarasha Boys in Kieni, and Kaheti in Mukurwe-ini were heading back to school after it was reopened that day, alongside all schools across the country.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that about 2,000 people have died on Kenyan roads since January 2022.
