Pwani University in Kilifi County has been thrown into mourning following the death of a first-year student from a suspected knife attack at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 20.

Faith Adongo Owino succumbed to her injuries after her assailants reportedly stabbed her multiple times along the now-notorious Misufuni road while returning home.

She was rushed to Kilifi District Hospital's Emergency wing, where she succumbed to her injuries at about 10 pm, four days after being admitted to the tertiary institution.

During the robbery attack, Owino struggled to breathe and fight for her life as the robbers walked away with her phone, leaving her to bleed to death from the wounds inflicted on her neck.

Good Samaritans as well as Emergency Service providers had rushed her to Mephi Hospital where she was administered first aid before doctors temporarily admitted her to monitor her progress.

However, the situation worsened, prompting a transfer by medics to Kilifi County Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) prior to her death.

Pwani University Student Association chairman Nashon Okoth mobilised students and staff to contribute blood to save Owino, who lost a lot of blood following the attack.

"Good evening, comrades. Following the proceedings of the stabbed comrades. We are appealing to anyone with blood group A+ to reach the Kilifi District emergency wing so that we can save her life," read the appeal.

The incident sparked uproar with Pwani University trending on X by the time of publishing this story.

"A Pwani University comrade by the name of Faith Owino, a first-year student, was stabbed last night and has lost her life.

"It is high time insecurity in our Kenyan universities be addressed. Comrades are living in fear for their lives on a daily basis," one user wrote on the platform.

This notably mirrors an incident involving the mysterious death of a first-year student who was four days into her admission at Daystar University to pursue a course in Nursing.

The 18-year-old, identified as Mercy Cherono was found dead in a hostel only four days after reporting for her studies.

The family had confronted the school official present in the hospital regarding the chain of events leading to her demise, who revealed to them that their daughter was in the hospital where she was confirmed dead after suffering a stab wound on the left side of the chest.

“The post-mortem report is not conclusive, samples were taken and they are yet to be released from the government chemist. The preliminary report only states that the child died of excessive bleeding due to a deep cut from a knife stabbing,” Cherono's father, Bowen Kanda, told the media.
