The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Saturday, May 27 urged members of the public to help them track down a matatu whose conductor was caught on camera manhandling a female passenger.

In a short statement, NTSA asked Kenyans to share the registration number of the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) for tracking and action to be taken.

"Kindly share with us the registration number of the vehicle," NTSA wrote.

Prior to NTSA's response, the undated video had gone viral on social media, with a section of Kenyans appealing to the Ministry of Transport and other stakeholders to intervene.

Here is the video:

The conductor was captured harassing the passenger, accusing her of not paying bus fare, despite her retaliation that she paid the undisclosed amount.

The ensuing confrontation soon turned ugly as the tout went on to forcefully drag the woman out of the vehicle.

A law enforcement officer was captured thereafter watching the ensuing scuffle before trying to intervene but did not restrain the conductor. Despite his presence, the conductor ignored the cop and pulled out the passenger, with other helpless passengers looking on.

Despite the date of when the video was taken yet to be established, Kenyans called for immediate intervention from the stakeholders to address what was slowly turning out to be a crisis in Nairobi.

"Usiwahi kubali msee arushwe nje ya mat because of 20 bob na uko nayo extra (Don't allow someone to be thrown out of a matatu because of Ksh20 and you have an extra coin). Some of these incidents have turned out disastrous," Twitter user Joseh, who shared the viral video, appealed.

Some Kenyans called for fresh reforms in the matatu industry to address issues regarding noncompliance and passengers refusing to pay fares.

Others implored other passengers to intervene to prevent the increase in commuters being thrown out of matatus leading to deaths and serious injuries.

In May 2023, NTSA and police apprehended a tout attached to Embassava Sacco, accused of throwing a 17-year-old boy out of a moving bus.

The boy succumbed following injuries he sustained in the incident along Outeting Road on Wednesday, May 17, which prompted residents to torch the Embassava bus.

"Following the unfortunate incident that led to the loss of the life of a passenger onboard a vehicle belonging to Embasava Sacco, the conductor who was at large has been apprehended by NTSA and handed over to the police," Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen stated on May 19, 2023.

However, the bus driver and the Sacco responded by alleging that the passenger was reaching for his fallen phone and was not assaulted as claimed.
