The government has announced that it has approved for national celebrations to last one week, from now henceforth.

This has been confirmed on Friday, December 9 by State House Press Secretary Emmanuel Talam in a statement to newsrooms.

Talam noted that the celebrations will prioritise issues that affect the aspirations and priorities of the nation, adding that the current theme of the Jamhuri Day celebrations set for Monday, December 12 will focus on matters of Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and innovations.

"Cabinet has approved national celebrations, from now on, last a week and focus on an issue that touches the aspirations and priorities of the nation. The theme of this year’s Jamhuri Day – Connect, Innovate and Inspire – will be on ICT and innovations.

"As a result, between December 6 and 8, 2022, the focus has been on exhibitions and discussions on the sector, including the presidential launch of the Innovation Outlook for Kenya, at the Sarit Centre Expo Centre in Nairobi," he said.

Talam added that there will be high-level discussions on technology and innovations on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), which will be attended by various Cabinet Secretaries (CS). The CSs and various senior government officials will headline the events, and discuss various challenges and plans for the sector.

On Sunday, December 11, 2022, global tech leaders from various companies will be in the country and, together with President Ruto, will discuss various partnerships and opportunities for Kenyans and thereafter meet innovators at the KICC for further engagement.

"On Monday, December 12, 2022, at Nyayo Stadium, various interventions, including tech scholarships for those attending, graduations and new-look additions to what constitutes entertainment, will be at play," he added.

The celebrations will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium. Journalists intending to cover the event were asked to collect accreditation badges for the events on December 10 and 11 at the KICC ground floor section from 5:00 pm. They have also been asked to register their interview requests if any.

Speaking during the official opening of the Kenya Innovation Week at Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi on Tuesday, December 6, the Head of State revealed plans to introduce themes in national holiday celebrations, a change from previous editions under former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other presidents.

For his first Jamhuri Day as the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya, Ruto chose to focus on technology and innovation, compared to previous editions that have long featured parades in between entertainment and political speeches.

He will also invite leaders in the global technological space drawn from Facebook and Google to the national event in line with one of his promises to create a digital superhighway in the country.

Nonetheless, the national event is expected to be graced by dignitaries and various political figures. Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga is a confirmed absentee as he will travel to the United States (US) for a one-week tour.
