The National Police Service (NPS) has denied reports that Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi was abducted, instead claiming that he intentionally avoided arrest over an active land fraud case.

NPS on Monday, May 26, responded to a viral video which made rounds online and in sections of the media, which allegedly showed Koimburi motionless after he was abandoned at a farm in Juja.

According to police, Koimburi went into hiding after finding out that authorities were set to arrest him on Friday, May 23, after getting the green light from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to move forward with the case.

"The MP has been under investigation for a land fraud matter, and consent to prosecute was issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

"On Friday, 23rd May, the MP, fully aware of the police's intention to arrest him, evaded a dragnet operation, duped officers by escaping on a motorcycle alongside his private security, and switched off his mobile phone," the police responded in a statement.

The NPS stated that Koimburi had been off the radar until Monday morning, when he reappeared as reports of his alleged abduction surfaced.

Police from Juja Police Station visited the location where the MP was reportedly discovered, and the area has been formally documented.

In the meantime, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has begun a more in-depth investigation into the incident.

"Police from Juja visited the alleged scene, and the area was properly documented. Meanwhile, a special team from DCI headquarters is analysing the purported abduction video and all circumstances surrounding these allegations to conclusively establish the truth," the statement continued.

The NPS is also calling on anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist with the probe, providing Kenyans with these channels: toll-free numbers 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203). They are also encouraged to report to their nearest police station.

NPS's statement came just hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua paid a visit to the hospitalized MP at Karen Hospital, then held a fiery press conference where he directly held the government responsible for Koimburi’s ordeal.

Gachagua claimed that elite officers hired by the state had brutally tortured the lawmaker and allegedly used chemicals on him to prevent him from speaking.

"I have talked to the doctors and they have confirmed that the honourable George Koimburi was tortured by professionals. He has serious soft-tissue injuries...this is torture normally done by professionals. He has lost his voice, and the doctors are working around the clock to restore his vocal cords. He has been able to communicate through writing because he is not able to speak," he revealed.

"Some chemical was administered through inhalation, and the doctors have told us that preliminary investigations confirm that the chemical has interfered with his vocal cords."

Koimburi was reportedly abducted in broad daylight during a church service on Sunday. Less than a day after Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa claimed Koimburi was snatched and shoved into a Subaru by unknown men, the MP was found abandoned at Jacaranda Coffee Plantation in the Kibichoi area of Ruiru, Kiambu County.
