Attorney General Justin Muturi now wants an anti-corruption anthem to be sung alongside the Kenyan national anthem and the East African Community (EAC) anthem.

Speaking on Friday, December 9, during the commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day 2022 at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Muturi proposed that Kenyans should sing the anti-corruption song alongside the two anthems, at a go.

He credited the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) anthem as a great song and should therefore be sung in line with the regional and national anthems, just like how the Lord's prayer is recited like a habit.

"In order to do this we must apparently continue to be reminded every hour, every day just like we say the Lord's prayer. So I'm saying this because there was a very nice song.

"I don't know why I have never heard it before but when I heard it I wondered why don't we have it. The anti-corruption song," Muturi said.

Muturi added that there are many functions, many that have even featured President William Ruto, that feature both anthems, therefore is a need to add the anti-corruption anthem to the mix.

"We have so many functions that we are invited to and we attend. We only do the national anthem and the EAC anthem. I think I would propose those of us in the clip to have this (EACC anthem) included," he added.

The East African Community Anthem, titled Wimbo wa Jumuiya Afrika Mashariki was adopted by the East African Community Summit on December 3, 2010, in order to strengthen the integration process.

It is sung because it exhorts East Africans to pursue the virtues of unity, patriotism and hard work while cultivating a spirit of comradeship.

A directive passed by the Cabinet in 2016 compelled both the Kenyan and EAC anthems to be sung at public events in an effort to boost EAC integration. As a result, all government and public learning institutions in Kenya are required to sing the anthem as well as hoist the East African Community (EAC) flag.

The adoption of the Anthem brought to an end a decade-long search for a song that East Africans would call their own.

The International Anti-Corruption Day was designated by the United Nations (UN) on the realisation that corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries.

In the Corruption Perceptions Index 2021, Kenya is ranked 128th out of 180 countries for corruption, tied with seven other countries, including Bolivia, Azerbaijan, Laos, and Paraguay.
