Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has claimed that President William Ruto needs the support of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in order to stabilise his government and enhance his bid for a second term in 2027.

In an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, October 24, Maanzo alleged that President Ruto is striving to bring Kalonzo towards his side because he needs his voting block to stabilise his Kenya Kwanza government.

He argued that the Head of State cannot convince the 13th Parliament to amend some sections of the Constitution of Kenya without a two-thirds majority.

Maanzo noted that Ruto needs more numbers in the August House for the effective running of his government, hence his need to win more support from the opposition (Azimio la Umoja camp).

“Clearly, President Ruto can not raise 2/3 of MPs or Senators without consulting or getting part of Azimio. It is clear to him that he needs the voting block of Kalonzo to stabilise his government fully,” Maanzo said.

“Ruto and his team know that the election was closely contested, there are many things they can not do with parliament unless they have more numbers.”

Maanzo confirmed that Ruto had reached out to Kalonzo immediately after he was sworn into office on Tuesday, September 13 for an offer to work with him. However, the Wiper National Executive Committee (NEC) decided that they would remain in the opposition and check the current regime.

"President Ruto reached out to Kalonzo Musyoka but he did not accept the president's offer. If everybody walks into government, who will check the government?" he posed.

Speaking during thanksgiving service in Kitui County on Sunday, October 23, Ruto revealed that he met Kalonzo and offered him a chance to work in his government, but the Azimio principal rejected his offer and decided to remain with party leader Raila Odinga in the opposition.

“I want you to know that I have looked for Stephen, sat down with him and told him ‘here is the government, let us work together’ he told me he wants to try opposition first.

"So, let him try opposition first then we see where he gets, and then we can talk later. There is no problem, even opposition is work, it also helps us to move Kenya forward,” Ruto said.

Ruto declared that the people from the Lower Eastern region would not be left out of his government nor be sidelined in development projects, even without Kalonzo's support.

He was forced to make the clarification after fanfare ensued following his shaking hands with the former Vice President during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Thursday, October 20 and pressure by leaders from the region for the two to pair up.
