Azimio la Umoja Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga made a surprise appearance at the inauguration ceremony of Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Thursday, September 15.

He explained that he had to leave the country on the day of President William Ruto's swearing-in, to Zanzibar where he recuperated after hurting his face in a treadmill accident.

"I went to recuperate in Zanzibar. I took my wife, children and grandchildren out of the shock they got," he stated.

"I came this morning from Zanzibar and arrived later, I was not able to be with you at the swearing-in (of Abdulswamad), but here I am."

The 2022 presidential aspirant congratulated the governor for winning the election, claiming that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) intentionally postponed the Mombasa gubernatorial election to manipulate the election.

"The people of Mombasa overwhelmingly voted for Azimio. The same thing happened in Kakamega. I want to thank the people of the two counties for standing with Azimio," he said.

Raila, in a statement on Monday evening, September 12 acknowledged that he had received an invite and phone call from Ruto inviting him to the highly-anticipated ceremony. However, he regrettably stated that he would not be available to attend as he was out of the country and was also engaged in other serious matters.

"This evening, I received a letter and a telephone call from H.E Dr William Ruto inviting me to his inauguration set for tomorrow, September 13, 2022. I regret however that I will not be available for the inauguration because I am out of the country and I also have other serious concerns," read the statement in part.

Raila Pokes Holes At Supreme Court Verdict

Speaking during the inauguration, he also hit out at the Supreme Court verdict which threw out his petition that sought to invalidate Ruto's win over him in the 2022 August 9 general elections.

He particularly termed the ruling as a dictatorship and went on to state that the seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome could not explain what grounds led to them upholding Ruto's win.

"It was not based on any law. It was based on thuggery. We are not going to allow another dictator to become the leader of this country.

"We will also not allow the judiciary to become a dictator in this country," he said.

He hinted that the Azimio coalition would take steps to demand answers over the ruling, stating that they have a right to reject injustice in the country.

"We can lead a one million march to the judiciary and tell them to go home. We have a right as a people to not agree with bad rulings.

"Shame on the judiciary of this country. We will talk," he said.

He added that the Supreme Court ignored evidence by the Azimio legal team that proved that foreigners had interfered with the election process, especially Venezuelan Jose Camargo.

"I am not talking as Raila Odinga. What the people saw happening on September 5 was a shock. Why should the people wake up early in the morning to wake up and vote?" he wondered.

"Why should people wake up to go queue and vote then Jose Camargo decides who will become president?"
