Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga on Monday, January 22 called out the Daily Nation over its report claiming that the coalition was on the verge of collapsing, almost a year and a half after losing the 2022 general elections.

Speaking in Lamu County, the former Prime Minister remarked that a headline report carried in the local daily turned out to be unfortunate and false.

The report had alleged internal squabbles in the coalition as well as Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) which was seeking to kick out some of its members including Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.

Raila, in classifying the report as irresponsible, remarked that Azimio has always remained intact post-2022 polls, save for a few Members of Parliament who jumped ship to work with President William Ruto.

"There is an article in the Nation which is talking about Azimio, that it is breaking up. I want to dispel any rumour being spread by irresponsible media. There is no danger of Azimio collapsing any time soon," Raila assured.

"We want our media to be responsible, we don't want media to spread unnecessary and irresponsible propaganda. Nobody has left Azimio, it has remained intact except for a few members of parliament who decided to take a walk."

The opposition leader revealed that he was stunned to see the newspaper headline claiming a major disagreement within the coalition, moreso because it came from a media house he considered highly respected.

He therefore urged the newspaper, and by definition Kenyan media, to desist from spreading irresponsible rumours.

"There is no disagreement anywhere in Azimio and that is why we are taken aback to see a banner headline in a very senior media in the country. We want to say this is irresponsible journalism, that must be discarded.

“We don't want the media to try to spread despondency amongst the members of Azimio. We have stood very firm, Azimio is on a course of liberation in this country. There may be sometimes disagreements of opinions on one issue or one another but that does not mean disintegration,” he added.

The Azimio leader explained that the coalition had stood firm after losing in the 2022 general election and was on track to liberate the country.

Raila remarked that the vision of Azimio was to liberate the country from what he described as tyranny and irresponsibility.

Earlier, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad had also assured Lamu residents that Azimio and ODM were intact. On Sunday, several ODM leaders castigated reports that the party was seeking to punish Junet for missing key meetings.

Led by former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina, they remarked that Junet had made huge sacrifices for ODM and Azimio and hence deserved respect from the party.

According to the reports, the vocal lawmaker who enjoyed privileges for being an ardent loyalist to the party leader Raila Odinga was served with a show-cause letter seeking an explanation on why he was not involved in the activities of not only ODM but the larger Azimio La Umoja coalition.

Besides being the Minority Whip, Junet serves as Azimio La Umoja's secretary general and ODM's director of campaigns and parliamentary affairs.
