President William Ruto has appointed the director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) Mohamed Amin Ibrahim as the new Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The announcement was revealed in a gazette notice dated Friday, October 14.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 30 of National Police Service Act,2011, William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in chief of the Defense Forces appoint Amin Mohamed Ibrahim to be the Director, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)," the notice read in part.

Ibrahim emerged as the best pick out of 10 candidates who were shortlisted by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to take up the top post at the DCI.

Others who were shortlisted included Bernard Barasa Walumoli from Bungoma, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat from Nandi, Gideon Nyale Munga from Kilifi and Esther Chepkosgei Seroney from Elgeyo Marakwet.

David Kipkosgey Birech from Nandi, Jonyo Michael Wiso from Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nicholas Ireri Kamwende from Embu, Paul Jimmie Ndambuki from Machakos and Dr Simon Mwangi Wanderi from Nyandarua who were also included in the list.

"The 10 candidates, each of whom seek to fill the vacant position left by former DCI Director George Kinoti, CBS, have been invited for interviews and vetting on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Kenya School of Government, lower Kabete in Nairobi," announced NPSC.

Amin will take over from George Kinoti, who resigned on Tuesday, September 27. He rose to prominence following the 2007/08 post-election violence where he appeared as a witness at the International Criminal Court (ICC), testifying for former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali.

He attributed the delay in announcing the presidential results to the then Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) which caused tension nationwide, as well as the disagreements between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Party of National Unity (PNU), founded by the late Kenya's third president, Mwai Kibaki.

"There were also disagreements between the PNU and ODM luminaries at the KICC which people were watching on television," he told the international court.

Meanwhile, Kinoti's transfer of services to the Public Service Commission (PSC) was approved by the NPSC, where his services and remunerations will come from PSC just like any other public servant.

Reports indicated that PSC may move Kinoti to any government entity until he attains the age of retirement.
