President William Ruto has called on young people to reject manipulation by leaders he claims lack a clear vision for the nation, especially amid recent turmoil driven by political interests.

While meeting with Nairobi United FC at State House in Nairobi, Ruto appealed directly to the youth, warning them against being misled or exploited by individuals who use them to advance personal political agendas.

“It breaks my heart when people who have no plans for the young people of our nation take them to the streets, abuse them, misuse them, and we end up with mayhem, rape, and destruction of property and businesses because there are people who have no vision for our youths,” Ruto said.

The Head of State, appearing to fire back at an appeal by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to the young Kenyans at the forefront of anti-government protests to join the opposition, claimed that the opposition had no credible plan and only discussed Gen Z "because they want to use them politically."

“I want to tell those people who have no plan for the youth, shame on you. They should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of our young generation, and now our country has a plot; we have death tolls rising and loss of business. I want to tell the youth of our nation, do not be used by these visionless people and leaders,” he added.

He went on to highlight the vital role young people play in the country’s growth and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to providing them with meaningful opportunities.

“We, as Kenyans, have the best human capital,” Ruto said. “Kenyans are globally recognised—disciplined, hard-working, and able to perform with minimal supervision.”

He noted that over the past two years, his administration has facilitated the placement of 400,000 Kenyans in jobs abroad. “We are a global workforce,” he added.

Ruto voiced concern about the growing pattern of young people being drawn into protests by individuals he claimed lack a sincere agenda. He described the situation as heartbreaking, noting that those without real plans for the youth often push them into the streets, leading to chaos, including violence, sexual assault, and the destruction of property and businesses.

He also called out those he believes are exploiting Gen Z for political purposes. “They have no credible plan for the youth. They talk about Gen Z only to use them. Shame on them,” Ruto said, lamenting the rising death toll and economic losses tied to ongoing demonstrations.

Presenting a different direction, Ruto urged the youth to concentrate on the numerous opportunities around them, such as jobs and entrepreneurship, as a way to transform their lives. He also challenged those backing the protests to explain what concrete plans they have to offer.

In a heartfelt address to the nation on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader called on citizens to shift their strategy in opposing the current regime by beginning to register as voters, to confront Ruto through the ballot in the 2027 elections.

Gachagua expressed unease over the way the government has reacted to their calls for reform in the country.

“I want to appeal to our young people, the Gen Zs, looking at what Ruto has been doing to our children. I want to ask them to consider applying the next onslaught against Ruto by applying for IDs and registering as voters so that they can deal with him at the ballot,” he said.

“I fear for them; anytime they go to the streets, they are killed like chickens. When we look at desperation from Ruto and the brutal force he is using and the use of state militia to attack them, I want to urge them to join us in opposition and help us to get Ruto out of office in 2027."
