Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok has demanded the arrest and prosecution of a teacher from Alliance Girls High School, accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct with students.

While addressing the public at Kapkoros Barngetuny Secondary School in Nandi County, Bitok on Thursday, July 10, emphasised that the government maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance on any romantic relationships between teachers and students.

We are not going to condone any behaviour where teachers or any other stakeholders in school take advantage of our children.

"We want to condemn with the strongest words possible those behaviours of teachers or any staff members who want to take advantage of our children sexually,” said Bitok.

He further stressed that the government would not tolerate such misconduct, adding that the teacher involved will face disciplinary action, including interdiction. Bitok confirmed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and other relevant authorities have been engaged to ensure the teacher’s arrest.

He also pointed out that this issue isn’t isolated to Alliance Girls High School but reflects a broader problem across schools in the country—one that must be urgently addressed and stopped.

This follows an exposé by Africa Uncensored journalist and Alliance Girls alumna Christine Mungai, who revealed that a teacher named Peter Ayiro had crossed emotional and, at times, physical boundaries with current and former students.

On July 10, 2025, a group of Alliance Girls alumni staged a protest outside the school despite a strong police presence, accusing the institution and the TSC of ignoring their previous demands for action.

“We are here to ask why some of our demands have not yet been met, despite our earlier statement,” said one of the alumnae.

The former students of Alliance Girls High School issued a set of demands directed at the school, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the Ministry of Education, calling for urgent and decisive action in response to the sexual misconduct allegations involving a teacher.

Among their primary demands was the immediate and permanent removal of Ayiro from all teaching roles, particularly within Alliance Girls High School. They insisted he should never again be allowed to work in any educational setting.

The alumni also called for a public statement of accountability from the school's Board of Management, the TSC, and the Ministry of Education, addressing their role in allowing the alleged abuse to continue.

They further demanded an independent, survivor-informed investigation into how the misconduct persisted for so long. This probe, they said, should examine the involvement or negligence of teachers, school principals, and members of the Board of Management (BOM).

Additionally, the former students proposed that any staff members implicated in safeguarding failures be temporarily suspended from duty until investigations are complete. They emphasised the need for transparent reforms in student protection at Alliance Girls and similar institutions.

These reforms, they added, should include independent reporting mechanisms separate from the school structure, trauma-informed care for survivors, and adequate support systems for victims.

These demands came in the wake of an exposé by Africa Uncensored, which revealed that despite longstanding sexual abuse allegations, Ayiro remained in his position at the school and continued to hold a prominent role in the school’s Christian Union (CU).

“What made me look deeper was a specific revelation: that in 2021, news of an extramarital affair between the teacher and a former student had reportedly reached the leadership of the teacher’s church community, pastored by his father,” read part of the article.
