Kenyans are decrying alleged defiance by the popular Nairobi matatu Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO), Super Metro after several of its vehicles were spotted operating along major roads in the city despite its license being suspended by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

By the time of going to press, several Super Metro vehicles were on Thursday, March 20 spotted operating along its major routes including Thika Road, Mombasa Road, Ngong Road and Waiyaki Way, a matter Kenyans on social media cried foul about.

In particular, a Super Metro minibus carrying passengers was spotted operating along Thika Super Highway, while another was recorded en route to Mombasa Road, despite the NTSA ordering the suspension of the company’s operations.

This comes after NTSA cautioned Kenyans against boarding Super Metro vehicles and instructed traffic police to impound any found operating.

However, on Thursday afternoon, Super Metro's management strongly criticized the suspension, accusing the authority of issuing a blanket condemnation of the entire SACCO.

Speaking to the press in Nairobi, the company leaders claimed that NTSA had failed to conduct thorough investigations into the recent death of a passenger before imposing the ban.

While expressing frustration over the suspension, the SACCO officials warned that the move could lead to mass job losses but assured Kenyans that they would appeal the decision.

“We are very disappointed to realise that there is a lack of condemnation on SACCOs, we are worried by NTSA’s interference of a company with over 600 vehicles which are worth over Ksh1.4 billion,” noted a Super Metro boss.

“This Sacco has over 500 owners who have families to feed. As a federation, we have already done our investigations to find out what happened. Up to now, no passenger has recorded a statement to claim that the passenger was indeed pushed."

NTSA announced on Thursday morning the suspension of Super Metro, stating it will be in force until the company meets all requirements outlined in the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, along with other stipulated conditions.

NTSA also warned the public against using vehicles affiliated with the SACCO. "This is to notify the Public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator licence until the Company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014 and other set conditions," the notice read in part.

"Members of the public are cautioned against boarding vehicles belonging to Super Metro Limited. The Traffic Department is required to impound vehicles belonging to the Company found operating contrary to the suspension."
