Nairobi-based matatu sacco, Super Metro, has announced the suspension of a matatu crew allegedly involved in an incident whereby a passenger was thrown out of one of its moving vehicles and died.

Super Metro issued a statement on Wednesday, March 12, following the incident, expressing its deep sadness over the matter and stating that "Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time."

"We understand that the public is angry, and rightfully so. No one should lose their life in such a senseless manner. At Super Metro, we hold the sanctity of human life as a core value guiding our actions and decisions," the statement read in part.

The matatu firm assured its customers that it considers safety as a serious matter and that the incident is under investigation.

"We do not condone reckless behavior, and as a precautionary measure, the crew involved in this incident has been suspended pending further investigation. We will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served," added the statement.

Super Metro further announced that going forward, it would be reinforcing strict safety protocols and training to prevent such tragedies. "We appreciate the public’s patience and trust as we work to uphold the highest standards in passenger safety," added Super Metro.

According to unverified reports, the incident occurred a few days ago in the Kahawa area. The man was reported to have boarded a matatu charging Ksh80 for fare but could only afford Ksh50, which angered the conductor.

Despite his desperate pleas, the conductor refused to listen and instead opened the door, forcefully ejecting the man from the moving vehicle. The man reportedly died instantly, with a postmortem examination revealing that he succumbed to multiple fractures, including broken legs, ribs, and arms.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with Kenyans criticizing the well-known transport company that operates across multiple routes in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and surrounding areas.

Despite Super Metro reiterating its commitment to holding the highest standards across board whilst serving its customers, many have questioned the recent conduct of drivers and conductors hired by the company, which sharply rose to popularity among Kenyans owing to better customer service delivery compared to other matatu saccos, most of whom have been rivalling Super Metro.

On March 4, 2024, Super Metro took action against the driver and conductor of one of its buses, who was captured in a viral video driving along Thika Road against traffic in contravention of the law. In the 22-second clip, the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) branding the company's signature orange, navy blue and grey colours was spotted reversing in the middle of the busy highway before driving along the left-hand side of the opposite direction of the road.

The act sparked uproar with road users lamenting that the actions of the matatu had posed a great risk to motorists usually cruising at high speed along the busy road. Super Metro stated that the driver was arrested over his brazen misconduct by the company's inspectors.

"Following today's incident of one of our drivers on Thika Road, we would like to inform the public that the driver has been apprehended by our company Inspectors following his misconduct of making a U-turn on the Thika Superhighway endangering other road users.

"He was submitted to Central Police Station and then later picked by Pangani Police where the incident was reported and from there, will be arraigned in court. Thank you for your continued support," stated the company.

Super Metro Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nelson Mwangi also confirmed the arrest of the conductor and the subsequent expulsion of the duo.
