Police officers based in Kakamega County on Sunday, October 29 detained seven young women, some believed to be university students, after they were allegedly found engaging in explicit content production.

Reports indicated that the seven were caught in the act while within an apartment building in Mwiyala Ward, Sheywe Sub-County of Kakamega.

The suspects, including a Ugandan national, reportedly portrayed a lavish lifestyle thought to be funded by proceeds from the sale of the explicit content they were caught producing, a lifestyle that appeared to be a stark contrast from their public lives, away from the prying eyes of neighbours.

"What these girls have done is portray a very bad image to young kids. Parents assume that their children are in school studying, only to receive such disheartening news of their involvement in such activities for quick financial gains," lamented a concerned resident.

Speaking to Radio Citizen, Kakamega County Police Commander Joseph Kigen revealed that the seven were taken into custody, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) handling the matter.

Furthermore, various tools and equipment, including cameras, electronic devices linked to explicit content production, and computers were seized.

“The DCI is investigating this issue therefore we cannot give further information on the case before we are briefed on more by the Cyber Crime office because those devices have been taken for forensic testing to verify that they indeed partook in such activities,” Kigen revealed.

The police boss added that detectives are diligently pursuing leads to identify any potential accomplices associated with the group.

Residents called upon the government to address the issue comprehensively and take measures to prevent their recurrence.

Though it was not clear whether or not the suspects would make use of social media to display the produced explicit content in the hopes of generating revenue, the government has been making strides in cracking down on explicit content shared on social media platforms such as TikTok in the country.

On Thursday, August 24, TikTok committed to removing all offensive and inappropriate content on the platform following President William Ruto's meeting with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shou Zi Chew, a move the Head of State noted would ensure that content on the platform adheres to agreed guidelines.

In a virtual meeting with President Ruto, Zi Chew committed to ensuring that content is moderated to fit community standards.

"Kenya will work with the short-form video hosting service TikTok in reviewing and monitoring its content to ensure that it adheres to the agreed community guidelines and standards. It is our commitment that we bring up our children in the right environment.

"During a virtual meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew who also agreed to set up an office in Kenya to coordinate its operations in the region," stated Ruto.

The deal saw TikTok strengthen its content moderation in the country aimed at expunging content such as sexual activity, nudity, graphic content and animal abuse in order to maintain integrity on the platform.

The directives came amidst the furore that sparked following a petition filed in Parliament to have Members of Parliament (MPs) outlaw the social media platform over its explicit content.
