Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua may have written himself in history books after he on Tuesday, April 4 delivered what many would consider his shortest speech since ascending to the second-most powerful seat in the country.

While attending Social Protection Conference at the School of Government, Gachagua began his speech by greeting those in attendance, then shocked everyone within seconds by inviting President William Ruto to speak.

"Your Excellency, I don't have much to say today," Gachagua addressed with a wry smile to members of the audience.

In the speech that lasted a near-50 seconds long, the Deputy President acknowledged President William Ruto's efforts in bringing about peace in the country so that it can be productive.

He also acknowledged Azimio la Umoja Leader Raila Odinga for calling off the countrywide protests.

"When Kenya is peaceful, businesses are uninterrupted and Kenyans are busy, I don't have much to say," he added.

According to Gachagua, there was no need for him to make long speeches since his work of ensuring that the country is at peace was complete.

"It is now my privilege to ask you to be upstanding as I invite His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr William Ruto," Gachagua noted as the audience laughed in response, reeling in shock at one of the shortest speeches made by the politician in his career.

Gachagua over the past few weeks has been known for speeches that have majored in jibes at the opposition for among other things refusing to accept their loss to Ruto in the 2022 general elections as well as their calls for mass action protests.

The atmosphere, however, changed on Sunday, April 2 when President Ruto announced a truce between himself and Raila who he referred to as his brother and competitor, in a live address at State House where Gachagua was present.

Ruto urged Raila to call off the weekly nationwide demonstrations while agreeing to reconstitute the selection panel for the IEBC through a bipartisan parliamentary process, which was one of Raila's demands during the demonstrations.

Two hours after the President's address, the former Prime Minister called off the protests temporarily, accepting Ruto's call for dialogue over the constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Raila and Ruto are on record stating that they would not enter into corporation deals in form of a 'handshake'.

"I can confirm that Ruto has not met with Raila Odinga. He has not even spoken with Raila, leave alone the handshake

"A bipartisan approach is an approach that looks at the country's interest over and above the partisan interest because I may have my interests as the Kenya Kwanza side while Azimio has theirs. It has absolutely nothing to do with a handshake. I can see that some quarters are very happy with a handshake," National Assembly leader of the majority and Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wah addressed on Monday, April 3.
