The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned motorists using Mombasa Road to expect partial traffic disruptions.

In a traffic movement advisory on Thursday, February 8, KeNHA Director General Kungu Ndung’u revealed that the disruptions will affect both carriageways of the major road between Ole-Sereni and Athi River Interchange.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the Public that there will be partial traffic disruption on both carriageways of Mombasa Road (A8), between Ole - Sereni and Athi River Interchange," the notice read in part.

According to Ndung'u, the interruptions are occasioned by ongoing road maintenance works.

Despite the KeNHA boss not revealing how long the disruptions would last, he added that traffic movement would be guided by police. They will be assisted by the contractor staff on site as maintenance works proceed.

"Motorists using this road are advised to approach the affected sections with caution as some lanes will be closed and traffic subjected to shared lanes.

"Follow the traffic signs and guidance in place as shall be directed by Traffic Marshalls and Police on site," added KeNHA.

KeNHA had in 2023 issued a series of notices regarding various temporary closures on sections of roads in Nairobi with some opened on December 31, 2023, and others in January 2024.

For instance, a section of Mombasa Road was closed for six days, from December 25, 2023, to Sunday, December 31, 2023.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the Public that there will be closure of a section of the Mombasa bound carriageway at Imaara Mall (Tuff Steel) Junction along Mombasa Road (A8) Highway.

"The closure will commence on Monday 25th December 2023 at 9.00 pm to Sunday 31st December 2023 at 4.00 am," KeNHA announced on Sunday, December 24, 2023.

At the Nairobi Southern Bypass, both bounds between Lang'ata interchange and Ngong interchange were also temporarily closed until January 23, 2024.

In a notice on December 27, 2023, the authority revealed that the closure would allow for the installation of a virtual weighbridge.

In February 2023, KeNHA said plans were underway to upgrade the old Mombasa Road to the standards of Nairobi Expressway in a Ksh24.8 billion project that would see new footbridges and pedestrian paths constructed.

Ndung'u revealed that the construction was to start soon after the repair of the sections of the road destroyed during the construction of the Expressway was complete.
