Youth in Kenya could take home Ksh50,000 each starting this month to support their business ventures, according to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Kisii County on Thursday, May 22, Kindiki announced that funds would be allocated to youth enrolled in the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme.

He stated that the government had already released Ksh28 billion, which would be distributed to 70 young people in every ward nationwide who are interested in launching small businesses.

"We have a very big programme for the youth, both male and female; it is called NYOTA. We are giving money in all the wards across the country to support 70 businesses in each ward," the DP said.

"The government has released Ksh28 billion; starting this month, 70 businesses in each ward will be funded. Each youth will receive Ksh50,000 for expanding their businesses."

The Deputy President emphasised that only officially registered youth-owned businesses would qualify for the funds, encouraging young people to seize this unique opportunity.

Regarding senior citizens, Kindiki said the government had implemented various measures to provide them with similar support, stressing that the goal is to uplift all Kenyans, regardless of age.

"Let us help our youth to secure employment. For those who are not youth, like Mama Mboga and other business people, we have many interventions to support all businesses," the DP emphasised.

The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project is poised to transform the lives of 820,000 unemployed youth nationwide. This initiative will involve 100,000 youth with business ideas who will receive financial support to help them set up their ventures.

NYOTA is expected to be a scale-up project of the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP) and will build on lessons learned in the implementation of the KYEOP project, whose objective is to increase employment and opportunities for earnings and savings for targeted youth in all 47 counties.

The project will have four components, which include improving youth employability, supporting youth entrepreneurship, supporting savings for Kenyan youth in the informal sector, and strengthening systems and capacity to sustain youth employment and savings initiatives.

KYEOP was an ongoing five-year World Bank-funded project whose implementation started in the 2016/2017 financial year and ended in August 2023.

The project impacted the lives of youths across the 17 counties, where 97,420 youths benefited from business start-up grants and 68,200 youths with essential skills and employment opportunities.

741 youths benefited from the business plan competition, which targeted 750 youths and saw 250 of them receiving Ksh3.6 million and 491 received Ksh900,000 for businesses.

The government is currently rolling out the NYOTA programme through the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), aiming to reach more than 110,000 youth across the country.
