It has now emerged that human rights activist Boniface Mwangi was severely tortured when he was detained in Tanzania.

This was revealed on Thursday, May 22, by Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, who revealed that Mwangi was dumped at the Horohoro border post by Tanzanian security agents.

Khalid alleged that Mwangi had been brutally tortured, leaving him barely able to walk. He also posted videos showing Mwangi with visible injuries on his legs.

The activist emphasised that Mwangi required medical attention and mentioned plans were underway to move him from Ukunda, where he was discovered, to Nairobi for treatment. At the time of going to press, Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire, who was tortured alongside Mwangi, remains missing.

"Boniface Mwangi was dumped at the Horohoro border post this morning by Tanzanian security agents. He has been severely tortured and can barely walk. His body is broken, but his spirit remains strong.

"Agather is still missing and was equally ghastly tortured in the same location as Mwangi. We are making arrangements to transfer Boniface Mwangi to Nairobi for medical attention," Khalid updated.

The Horohoro border post is a key crossing point between Kenya and Tanzania, located along the coastal corridor. On the Kenyan side, it lies in Kwale County, while on the Tanzanian side, it connects to the Tanga Region.

This border post plays a crucial role in facilitating movement and trade between the two East African nations, especially for goods transported between Mombasa, Kenya's main port city, and northern Tanzania. It is part of the regional infrastructure aimed at enhancing integration within the East African Community (EAC).

Mwangi was abandoned in Ukunda, located in Kwale County, about 92 kilometres north of the Lunga Lunga border crossing with Tanzania. He had been deported by road from Dar es Salaam. The activist was reported missing on Monday after flying to Tanzania to attend a court hearing for opposition figure Tundu Lissu.
