The 45-year-old man who died on Sunday morning, March 12 after he rammed a Mercedes S-Class car into the central concrete block at the Pangani tunnel along Thika Road was a mechanic.

According to Starehe sub-county Police Commander Fred Abuga, James Ogola, a mechanic at Fitmax garage, was given the vehicle by the owner of the S500, Joanne Muthoni, prior to the accident that reportedly saw him lose control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend in the tunnel and crash into the wall of the tunnel along the major road.

Muthoni had disclosed on Monday, March 13 that she had given Ogola the vehicle on Thursday, March 9 for repairs and was to return it at a later period.

“I can confirm that the vehicle has not been stolen, it was picked up on Thursday for repairs by my mechanic,” Muthoni told the Nation.

She explained that she had learnt of the accident through frantic calls and texts to her phone by people wondering if she was involved in the accident, which was widely reported by Sunday afternoon.

“I have received overwhelming love and I thank everyone that has tried to reach me.

"My phone has been ringing non-stop, and I still have some missed calls that I have not responded to. However, I feel so sad that he lost his life,” she went on.

Following the crash, she expressed the need for control over how information is shared as her biggest lesson as the images and clips shared on social media left her dumbfounded.

On whether the mechanic had the liberty to drive the vehicle around, she said, “If there was a need to do a test drive, it’s okay.”

A police report indicated that the car burst into flames following the impact of the accident that occurred at 1:20 am. Ogola managed to escape from the ill-fated vehicle but was consumed by the flames coming from the car which burst into flames upon impact.

The mechanic was pronounced dead after he was rushed to hospital by police officers who arrived at the scene, confirming a witness account of what transpired at the accident scene. According to the officers, Ogola was speeding and hit the wall that splits the two roads after he lost control of the vehicle.

Police further noted that Ogola suffered severe burns on his limbs and lower body, making it difficult to identify him using his fingerprints.

“It was not possible to obtain the fingerprints due to the nature of the burns. We were exploring any angle that could give us some hint on who he might have been,” said Abuga.

At the city mortuary, the body had initially been registered as “an unknown male adult”. It was moved to City Mortuary ahead of identification and autopsy while the vehicle was towed to Pangani Police station.
