A 45-year-old man died on Sunday morning, March 12 after he rammed his Mercedes S-Class car into the central concrete block at the Pangani tunnel along Thika Road.

A police report indicated that the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend in the tunnel and crashed into the wall of the tunnel along the major road.

The car burst into flames following the impact of the accident that occurred at 1:20 am.

The driver managed to escape from the ill-fated vehicle but was consumed by the flames coming from the car which burst into flames upon impact.

“A self-involved fatal road traffic accident (which) occurred today at about 0120hrs along Thika Super Highway at Pangani tunnel involving a motor vehicle registration number KCT 9851 make Mercedez Benz 5300 driven by an unknown male adult of about 45 years,” a police report reads in part.

“The driver managed to get out of the vehicle but unfortunately was overwhelmed by the fire flames and fall about one meter away and died on the spot."

The driver was pronounced dead after he was rushed to hospital by police officers who arrived at the scene, confirming a witness account of what transpired at the accident scene.

"The accident happened at about 12.20 a.m. No survivors! I was among the first on the scene. A man was pulled out just as the engine caught fire," the witnesses indicated.

According to the officers, the driver was speeding and hit the wall that splits the two roads after he lost control of the vehicle.

The body of the deceased was moved to City Mortuary pending identification and autopsy while the vehicle was towed to Pangani Police station.

A post-mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death as police are also waiting for for the man's family to identify and claim his body.

A traffic snarl-up was witnessed following the accident as motorists stopped to rescue the occupants of the vehicle.

The Nairobi Fire Brigade was also alerted of the incident and arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. The vehicle's front part according to the images was reduced to ashes.

Back in January, veteran photojournalist William Oeri, who worked at the Nation Media Group (NMG) and People Daily newspaper perished following a road accident that occurred on Sunday, January 15 at Makuyu, Murang'a County.

A police report seen by Viral Tea at the time revealed that the accident, which involved a head-on collision with an oncoming lorry, occurred at about 3.00 pm at the Kitini area along the Sagana-Kenol road heading towards Kenol in Murang'a.

Police added that due to the impact the driver succumbed instantly to the injuries sustained whereas the driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries alongside his passenger.

Due to the impact, the Toyota Wish burst into flames but members of the public used sand to put out the fire before a fire brigade from Kenol arrived to extinguish it.
