5 Suspects In Charles Were Murder Slapped With Fresh Charges
This follows the consolidation of two separate cases previously filed at the Kibera and Milimani Law Courts.
Five suspects have been charged afresh with the murder of the late Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Ong’ondo Were, which occurred on April 30, 2025.
According to a statement by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) released on Tuesday, July 29, this follows the consolidation of two separate cases previously filed at the Kibera and Milimani Law Courts.
Lady Justice Diana Kavedza granted an application by the DPP to merge the cases, paving the way for the prosecution to pursue a joint trial against all five accused individuals.
The suspects—William Imoli Shigali alias Imo, Edwin Odour Odhiambo alias Machuani, Ebel Ochieng alias Dave Calo, Isaac Kuria Chege alias Kush, and Allan Omondi Ogola—are accused of jointly murdering Were on the evening of April 30, 2025, at approximately 7:40 p.m., near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road in Kilimani, Nairobi County.
Before the consolidation, Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng had denied the murder charge at the Kibera Law Courts, while Kuria and Omondi entered similar pleas at the Milimani Law Courts.
Justice Kavedza scheduled a bond ruling for Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng on August 14, 2025, and set a separate bond hearing for Kuria and Omondi on September 22, 2025.
The assailants, believed to have links to Parliament, trailed MP Charles Ongond’o Were before fatally shooting him near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road in Kilimani.
Among those later charged with his murder is his bodyguard, who allegedly jumped out of the vehicle as the shooter fled on a motorcycle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bodyguard briefly pursued the motorcycle before returning to the car to assist the driver in rushing the wounded MP to Nairobi Hospital.
During the ensuing manhunt, police also arrested the MP’s driver. Investigators recovered several items from a suspect’s residence in Nairobi, including Ksh615,000 suspected to be payment for the hit.
Two firearms—one confirmed to be the murder weapon—and the motorcycle used in the getaway were also seized as evidence.
