Five armed and dangerous thugs were on Thursday, July 6 arrested and a firearm was recovered in an operation led by detectives based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Starehe.

The five whom the DCI termed as responsible for the cold-blooded murder of a 37-year-old woman on June 26, were rounded up following an intelligence-led operation that also included a specialized team of detectives from the DCI Nairobi regional command.

The investigative agency narrated on Friday, July 7 in a statement that the woman identified as Beatrice Okumu had just closed her mobile money shop at around 10 pm on the fateful night before three thugs on a motorbike accosted her.

"After ransacking her handbag for money and other valuables, the thugs shot her leaving her lifeless body sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood, before they escaped. Detectives later collected two spent cartridges of 9mm calibre at the scene," stated the DCI in part.

Kevin Oduor alias Mande, John Chege alias Samir alias Chei, Leroy Omondi alias Leon Mutahi alias Issa and Clifford Bogonko, who were also connected to a series of robberies reported in various parts of Nairobi for the past two months, were arrested in the city’s Kayole area 3. 

"Also impounded was a white motorcycle registration number KMFH 073G belonging to one of the suspects, which was being used by the suspects as a gateway means. 

"The suspects are currently in custody assisting detectives with investigations, before being arraigned in court to answer to their crimes," added the DCI.

On Wednesday, June 28, a robbery with violence suspect was arrested and two firearms linked to various robberies in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Muranga and Kajiado counties were recovered by DCI detectives.

The suspect identified as Ezekiel Kiarie who has been on the run for the past few days was arrested along Limuru road as he escaped with his family from the city to his rural home in Dundori,  Nyandarua County. 

"Detectives intercepted a Mitsubishi canter registration number KAM 231J, that was ferrying the suspect, his family members and their belongings to Nyandarua, after realizing that detectives were closing in on them.

"After conducting a search in the vehicle, a Czeska pistol serial number B022944 with a magazine loaded with 2 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a CZ P-07 pistol serial number C626319 with a magazine loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm calibre were recovered," stated the DCI in part.

The firearms were linked to various incidents where victims lost money immediately after making transactions in banks. 

Separately, DCI on Monday night, June 12 shot dead four thugs responsible for a string of armed robberies in Machakos, Mombasa and Kwale Counties over the past few months.
