Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has promised a reward of Ksh100,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of robbers armed with an AK-47 rifle captured robbing a mobile money shop on Sunday, February 26.

CCTV footage shared on social media on Monday, February 27 showed the robbers wearing caps and face masks making their way to the shop located in Bamburi, Mombasa County at 2:09 pm posing as customers.

One of the thugs pretends to be withdrawing some money and is heard confirming the agent number to use with a female attendant who sat patiently waiting to serve him.

Meanwhile, the second robber is seen checking something in his backpack before he pulls out the AK-47 rifle, much to the surprise of the attendant.

Here is the video:

The other thug opens the door leading to the counter and orders the now shaken agent to surrender all the money in the shop as his accomplice threatens to shoot the woman if she doesn't cooperate.

“We do not have a problem with you if you cooperate,” one of the thugs shouts at the attendant.

One of the thugs is heard asking for more money as he ransacks the shop that also sells mobile phone accessories.

“Where is the rest of the money?” one of the robbers is heard asking even as the attendant maintains that she had given every penny she had.

The robbers force the woman to lie down as they flee the scene but left her in the company of their accomplices as they fled the shop with the money and other items

“We will leave you here with Kamau to keep watch as we rob the next shop,” they are heard before making their way to the exit.

Reacting to the clip, Sonko lamented that the days of armed robbers threatening their victims with sophisticated weapons in major cities had returned, robbing shops at will, particularly those dealing with mobile money.

He claimed to have sent President William Ruto the clip through WhatsApp as well as forwarding it to Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, calling upon them to deal with the robbers conclusively.

"President Ruto, these notorious robbers using guns have returned.

"Their work is to hurt small and prominent business owners in towns, for example, this clip that I sent you on WhatsApp and sent to CS Kindiki, as well as DCI Amin, is for yesterday in Bamburi, Mombasa. Give a low-key order to deal with the robbers just like what you are doing with the bandits," tweeted Sonko.

In addition, he appealed to Bamburi residents to provide him with information about the suspects or report to the police station regarding the same, promising the cash reward in return for their efforts.

"To the residents of Bamburi, anyone who knows these robbers should give me a report or report to the closest police station and they will get Ksh100,000," Sonko added.

Cases of robbers targeting mobile money shops and banks have been on the rise in recent years across the country.
