Speaking after the meeting, Gachagua revealed that he held great respect for Raila, despite being the opponent to President William Ruto in the August 9 general elections.

"We have tremendous respect for our senior citizens. I was delighted this morning to have a tete-a-tete with our senior citizen former Prime Minister Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga in Mombasa," Gachagua said on his official Facebook account.

The meeting came hours after Raila made a surprise appearance at the inauguration ceremony of Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Thursday, September 15.

He explained that he had to leave the country on the day of Ruto's swearing-in, to Zanzibar where he recuperated after hurting his face in a treadmill accident.

"I went to recuperate in Zanzibar. I took my wife, children and grandchildren out of the shock they got," he stated.

"I came this morning from Zanzibar and arrived later, I was not able to be with you at the swearing-in (of Abdulswamad), but here I am."

The 2022 presidential aspirant congratulated the governor for winning the election, claiming that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) intentionally postponed the Mombasa gubernatorial election to manipulate the election.

"The people of Mombasa overwhelmingly voted for Azimio. The same thing happened in Kakamega. I want to thank the people of the two counties for standing with Azimio," he said.

Speaking during the inauguration, he also hit out at the Supreme Court verdict which threw out his petition that sought to invalidate Ruto's win over him in the 2022 August 9 general elections.

He particularly termed the ruling as a dictatorship and went on to state that the seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome could not explain what grounds led to them upholding Ruto's win.

"It was not based on any law. It was based on thuggery. We are not going to allow another dictator to become the leader of this country.

"We will also not allow the judiciary to become a dictator in this country," he said.

He hinted that the Azimio coalition would take steps to demand answers over the ruling, stating that they have a right to reject injustice in the country.

"We can lead a one million march to the judiciary and tell them to go home. We have a right as a people to not agree with bad rulings.

"Shame on the judiciary of this country. We will talk," he said.
