68 Form Four students from St. Thomas Aquinas Igumori Secondary School in Mbeere South, Embu County have been rushed to hospital after allegedly consuming beef that was contaminated.

The students were taken to Kiritiri Level 4 Hospital for treatment, while three were transferred to Embu Level 5 Hospital for specialized care.

According to the school's principal, students consumed meat from a bull that was slaughtered on Wednesday, February 5. The bull was slaughtered in celebration of the school's impressive performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results released last month.

According to the principal, Form Four students and two teachers ate the animal’s head on Thursday and later fell ill.

Authorities are currently investigating the source of the contamination, while medical teams focus on stabilizing the affected students.

The incident is likely to spark fresh conversation regarding the quality, handling and preparation of food for students in high schools across the country.

Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County was on April 3, 2023, closed indefinitely following the deaths of two students in a case of suspected food and water poisoning. The severe health crisis led to over 100 students being admitted to the hospital with symptoms including fever and diarrhoea.

Mukumu Girls students had previously cited poor hygiene and administration negligence as causes of the crisis, with them recounting during a funeral service of one of their own how they raised concerns about the poor state of the school's water, store, and kitchen facilities but their complaints fell on deaf ears, with action taken when it was too late.

The Ministry of Health on Friday, April 14 confirmed the reported outbreak of the possible infectious disease in Mukumu Girls triggered by the consumption of contaminated water.

Before the dust could settle, Butere Boys High School in Kakamega County was thereafter closed indefinitely due to a suspected case of food poisoning. Around 100 students showed symptoms resembling cholera, such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

The school administration quickly sent the affected students home and engaged public health officials to investigate the cause of the outbreak. The closure was considered essential to protect students' health while awaiting a detailed report from health authorities.

In July 2023, Ikonge Girls High School in Nyamira County faced a similar situation when 138 students were hospitalized after suffering from severe diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms were suspected to have resulted from consuming contaminated food or water.
