Seven people were on Friday, July 12 confirmed dead, with several others injured following an accident along the Garissa-Mwingi road in the early morning hours.

Per a police report, the accident occurred at the Katumba trading centre area and involved the bus which was heading for Nairobi with 50 passengers on board and a stationary trailer.

According to police, the driver of the bus had unsuccessfully attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle and was in the process of returning to his lane when the accident occurred.

”On reaching the location of the accident, he was trying to overtake an unknown motor vehicle which did not stop after the accident and as he was trying to get back to his lane in order to avoid a head-on collision, rammed into the near side of a motor vehicle registration number KBW 788H/ZG 0936 Mercedes Benz trailer ferrying gypsum from Garissa direction and had stalled on the road due to mechanical breakdown,” read the report in part.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, where they found the aftermath of the horrific collision.

Witnesses report that the impact was severe, leading to immediate fatalities and critical injuries among several passengers.

Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif has mourned those who died in the accident. He stated "I send my condolences to the families of our brothers and sisters who have left us and the entire people of Mandera. I pray to Allah (SWT) to forgive their sins and admit them to Janatul Firdous, Ameen."

Police stated that officers promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and investigations to establish more leads relating to the accident were launched. Photos seen by Viral Tea showed the bus completely destroyed in the wreckage.

The incident comes after nine people were killed and scores injured on Saturday evening, June 29, after a matatu was involved in a road accident in the Ratili area along the Narok-Bomet highway.

According to reports, the driver of the matatu lost control of the vehicle after one of its tyres burst before it rolled several times, killing nine people on the spot.

Earlier in June, 10 people were confirmed dead following a tragic road accident that occurred in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

NTSA Accident Statistics

1,553 deaths have occurred as a result of road crashes from January 1 to April 30, 2024. The data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that these deaths occurred across all counties.

Nairobi recorded the highest number of fatalities at 176, followed by Nakuru and Kiambu at 134 and 128 fatalities respectively.

Kisumu recorded 59 deaths, Machakos 56, Kilifi, Meru, Murang'a and Uasin Gishu recorded 50 cases each, and Narok 48 deaths.
