Unconfirmed reports surfaced as early as Friday, April 14 of Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi's divorce from his wife, Hiba Abouk and spread like wildfire across Kenya as well as in many countries worldwide.

French magazine First Mag reported that Abouk was seeking half of Hakimi's assets and fortune but discovered to her shock that he owns nothing, even though he earns millions of shillings with PSG and the Moroccan national football team.

This discovery was made during ongoing divorce proceedings in court after Abouk filed for divorce in the hopes that she would get half of the luxury fortunes and wealth owned by the 24-year-old footballer.

The plot twist emerged when she learnt that Hakimi had registered all his properties and monies in his mother’s name, and whenever he needed anything, he would ask his mother to buy it for him.

All his houses, cars, clothes, and jewellery were found to be in his mother’s name, and millions in salary were deposited in accounts bearing his mother’s name. It was further reported that 80 per cent of all that he owns is registered in his mother’s name.

Despite Hakimi yet to comment on the matter, the move of not having his wealth registered under his name sparked debate across the world, and Kenyans were not left out of the fanfare with their takes on the matter.

"Achraf Hakimi is 24 and the girl is 36??? He needs some little dose of Amerix in his life. Akona bahati ameponea chupu chupu apo kwa pesa na divorce lakini (He is lucky he escaped regarding his wealth and divorce, however)," Eve Maina responded.

"Achraf Hakimi deserves the Man of the Year Award. He purchases jewellery, cars, and apartments and immediately registers in his mother's name. The only woman y'all should trust!" Sam Lulli weighed in.

Popular masculinity coach Eric Amunga (Amerix) however criticised Hakimi's move, stating "He is a simp. Married a woman 12 years older than him. Ignore the social media thrills calling him 'goat'."

Hakimi flaunted his beloved mother, Sadia Mouth, throughout Morocco’s campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He was famously captured rushing to her to have a kiss on his cheek or dance when Morocco defied all odds by beating Spain via a penalty shootout and thereafter defeating Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

He did it game after game, which became a culture within the Morocco squad as other teammates did the same. It got to the point that even Coach Walid Regragui was captured celebrating as he jumped into the stands after the win over Spain to embrace her among jubilant Morocco fans.

“We thought about this with the staff and we thought about details like bringing in our family members to try to build team spirit and that helped us go far in this tournament.” Regragui was quoted by Stuff.

Hakimi is facing preliminary charges of rape after a 24-year-old woman accused him of rape in February. Police opened an investigation into the matter even though the alleged victim told them that she only wanted to “make a statement of rape,” without filing an official complaint.

Last month, Abouk broke her silence for the first time on the rape allegations against Hakimi and said she would always stand by the side of victims, adding that she decided to separate from Hakimi before he was indicted with rape, but did not explain the reason behind the separation.

Abouk, whom Hakimi met in 2018 when he was playing for Borussia Dortmund in Germany's Bundesliga, is twelve years older than him and gained recognition for her role in the Spanish crime drama El Principe.

Hakimi and his wife share similar backgrounds, with Abouk being born in Madrid to Tunisian immigrants. In 2020, the couple got married in a private ceremony before welcoming their first child followed by a second child born in 2022.

What Does The Kenyan Law Say About Property Sharing After A Divorce?

In Kenya, it is worth it to note that the Supreme Court ruled on Friday, January 27 that spouses are not automatically entitled to a 50/50 share of the matrimonial property during the dissolution of a marriage.

The highest court in the land referred to Article 45 (3) of the Constitution deals with the equality of the fundamental rights of spouses during the dissolution of a marriage. However, it ruled that in divorce cases, each partner should leave the marriage with property equivalent to their individual contribution to the union.

The court further stated that a party (spouse) must prove contribution to enable a court to determine the percentage available to him or her at the distribution of matrimonial property and that the test to determine the extent of contribution is one on a case-to-case basis.

The Supreme Court affirmed that the ruling will establish a new ground for future disputes whereby the sharing of matrimonial property after divorce has been affecting duelling couples.

"What amounts to a fair and equitable legal formula for the reallocation of matrimonial property rights at the dissolution of a marriage and whether the same can be achieved by a fixed means of apportionment at a 50:50 ratio should be done in light of the circumstances of each individual case," stated the seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
