Kenya Red Cross Society secretary general Dr Asha Mohammed resigned on Friday, April 14 after three years and four months in office.

Board chairman and Red Cross governor Geoffrey Korir announced in a statement that Dr Mohammed stepped down from the top position owing to personal reasons, effective immediately.

The board moved to replace her with Ahmed Idris as the acting Secretary-General.

"Dr Asha will in the next few months support the leadership transition as she hands over in acting capacity to the Deputy Secretary General Dr Ahmed Idris.

"The Board is confident that Dr Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process with the support of the Board, Staff, Volunteers and Partners of the Kenya Red Cross," the statement read in part.

Dr Mohammed was appointed the Red Cross Secretary-General in January 2020 and prior to that, she held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.

The society lamented that her exit came at the same time the country spent three years battling crises such as drought and the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Her role as Secretary General coincided with a very difficult global and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic to the worst drought the country has experienced in the last several decades.

"Under her leadership, Kenya Red Cross has lived up to its commitment of being "always there", responding to emergencies and supporting communities. The Board is grateful for her service, passion and commitment," the statement added.

Red Cross praised Dr Mohammed as an inspiration to the community of Staff, Volunteers, Partners and Members of the society, who look forward to her support in the future as a community leader and its life member.

Dr Mohammed and the governor attended major functions across the country together, including the recent installation of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja as Red Cross’ Nairobi branch patron.

President William Ruto is the current patron of the Red Cross, the fifth patron since the formation of the non-governmental organ in 1965.

Dr Mohammed presided over the Head of State's installation as the patron in November 2022 in a ceremony where drought mitigation ways were discussed to address the ongoing crisis in many parts of the country.

The president on his part welcomed the installation stating that the country through the organization would partner with other bodies and organizations in ensuring Kenyans in drought-hit areas receive the required aid.

“Honoured to join the Kenya Red Cross Society as a patron, State House, Nairobi,” stated President Ruto.

“The Kenya Red Cross Society must build strong, expanded and productive collaboration that will encompass response to climate change in its operations. That way, it will help mitigate the adverse effects of a changing environment and build resilience in our communities.”
