Many may argue that the game of love has seen the introduction of controversial tips, rules, techniques, name it. Couples these days are willing to go to extremes to win over each other.

Despite a struggling economy and excessive tax measures being proposed and implemented which worsen the cost of living, some Kenyans, mostly the youth, still find the space and audacity to spend thousands of shillings impressing their significant other on their special days.

Sometimes it's not just being taken out on expensive dates, some have tried bizarre ways of doing background checks on the person they are eyeing while others have stood by outrageous courtship opinions such as 'I can never date a man who takes home packed food from a restaurant'.

Viral Tea compiled some of the wildest dating and relationship stories and opinions that have triggered debate on social media this year:

Kevin Mboya Travelling 500 km To Surprise Lover Who Ghosted Him

Kenyans took to Twitter on Friday, January 27 to express concern over social media influencer Kevin Mboya who has not posted on the platform for nearly two days. Mboya on Thursday, January 26 shared a post on Twitter (now X) revealing that he embarked on an 8-hour 35-minute journey from Nairobi to Kwale to surprise his girlfriend, who was celebrating her birthday then.

He added that he had not contacted her for the previous 24 hours, with the belief that she had forgotten that he knew when her birthday was.

Nonetheless, this didn’t stop him from embarking on the 502-kilometre journey to the coastal county, carrying a bouquet of flowers and waiting for her outside her office upon his arrival. He did not post the aftermath of the meeting as worries regarding his social media absence for close to two days grew.

Taking to his YouTube channel later on, Mboya called out his girlfriend for ghosting him.

“I told myself maybe she didn’t want to see me or maybe she had left the building with another door. I left and went back to my friend’s place in Mombasa. The next day it dawned on me that maybe this lady doesn’t want anything to do with me. I decided to come back to Nairobi," he stated.

“Up to today, she has never texted me back and even now I don’t see her status on WhatsApp, I don’t know what happened so that’s how things turned out. And that’s why I had to come back with the flowers because I never found the person I was supposed to give the flowers to so I had to come back with them. I’m yet to hear from her. Maybe one day she will come out and tell me this is what happened, as of now I know nothing."

Kenyan Woman's Surprise Of 300 Roses, Ksh56K Dinner

On Wednesday, March 1, Celine Kariuki, a video creator and brand ambassador, was treated to a dinner costing Ksh56,500 and gifted 300 roses by her boyfriend who was proposing to her to formalize the relationship.

Kariuki took to her Instagram stories to show off the huge bundle of flowers as she was led to a waiting Toyota Landcruiser Prado, with a hotel bellman holding the door for her to enter as the couple drove to their dinner location.

According to the bill which she also shared, the couple had ordered five 750-millilitre bottles of still water priced at Ksh600 each and a quantity of beef carpaccio costing Ksh3,500, an ostrich at Ksh3,500, tomahawk (steak) at Ksh9,000, ribeye at Ksh8,000, cremeux at Ksh1,800, baked white chocolat at Ksh1,200, cappuccino and caffe latte each costing Ksh5,000.

The most expensive item they ordered was a Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut Champagne which cost Ksh25,000. This is compared to some online stores which sell 750ml of the drink at about Ksh9,800 and Ksh18,500 for a 1.5 litre.

The bill as well as the date sparked various reactions on social media divided into two sides; Kenyan women wishing they would be treated like Kariuki by their men and Kenyan men being tormented with pressure to win over their women, especially after the cake contained a proposal written: "Will you be my girlfriend?"

Rapper Who Slept With 900 Women

Bendo Prussia, a rising Kenyan rapper who caused a stir on Telegram for years, stunned the whole country by revealing the intrigues of hooking up with up to 900 women, breaking it down to how after he meets one, another has her eyes on him and ends up in a hookup.

"I love women, so when you are seeing one, another wants you, so you have to have two of them in your circle. Then again, when you have two, another wants you, so you find yourself with three women.

"You find yourself with so many women, now when you get bored of the last one, you get rid of your first one and place her in 10th, when the 9th one bores you, you promote her to number 1 then you move to number 8," he told Plug TV.

The constant changing of women like he changes clothes thus led to his body count, to which he admitted to sleeping with up to 900 women in his life while using protection.

"I don't count, but maybe I've hit 800 or 900 women, but I don't count. Those people who steal from my status can count and let me know...but if you've been my fan since the first day on my IG that was hacked, you know my body count, I've hooked up with many rich women and I use protection," he went on.

Achraf Hakimi Registering Assets In Mother's Name After Alleged Divorce With Wife

Reports surfaced as early as Friday, April 14 of Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi's divorce from his wife, Hiba Abouk and spread like wildfire across Kenya as well as in many countries worldwide.

French magazine First Mag reported that Abouk was seeking half of Hakimi's assets and fortune but discovered to her shock that he owns nothing, even though he earns millions of shillings with PSG and the Moroccan national football team.

This discovery was made during divorce proceedings in court after Abouk filed for divorce in the hopes that she would get half of the luxury fortunes and wealth owned by the 24-year-old footballer.

The plot twist emerged when she learnt that Hakimi had registered all his properties and monies in his mother’s name, and whenever he needed anything, he would ask his mother to buy it for him.

All his houses, cars, clothes, and jewellery were found to be in his mother’s name, and millions in salary were deposited in accounts bearing his mother’s name. It was further reported that 80 per cent of all that he owns was registered in his mother’s name.

Woman Using NTSA Website To Stalk Man She Liked

Waithera Kihara, a commercial and corporate lawyer and advocate of the High Court of Kenya, became an internet sensation on X (formerly Twitter) following her narrative of using the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) website to spy on a 'gorgeous' man she bumped into.

She spoke highly of the said man whom she happened to stumble upon on a Wednesday evening some few months ago when he parked right next to her and entered a pharmacy in a huff.

Admitting that she was under the influence following her adventures in Tigoni, Limuru, Kiambu County, Kihara beautifully described the man as a well-off individual with fine taste in luxury depicted by the kind of car she indicated he was driving.

"5'9 at best, medium build, not dark not light, bald, frameless spectacles (the ones newly monied men get from abroad to make a statement), sexy man," her flowery tweets read.

Though rubbishing the assumption that he was a lawyer owing to his corporate outfit of the day, Kihara added that she memorised his number plate as he drove off, committing not to look him up unless she couldn't stop thinking about him, until...

"Two days later this fool was still on my mind for some reason and I could somehow still remember his number plate so I did this lil invasive but allowable thing okay? I NTSA'd (searched on the NTSA website) the number plate and got a name.

"Remember that clean corporate look? yeah he had to have a LinkedIn account so I keyed in his name on LinkedIn (fingers crossed) and there he was!" she exclaimed.

Given that she had not used her LinkedIn account for a while, she requested to connect with him and stayed off the app out of anxiety that she did the one thing that was prevalent in her recent past.

Kihara would then message the man on LinkedIn and after he didn't respond, she realized that she had not included her phone number which she promptly did, afterwhich he messaged her on WhatsApp.

Woman Opposing Coffee Dates Leads To Viral Tea Explainer

A Kenyan woman named Cindi Munene sparked a massive debate on X (formerly Twitter) when on Wednesday, October 31, she expressed her disgust at men asking her out on a coffee date, a drink she believed she could make right from her house.

"Idk (I don't know) why men are comfortable asking for a coffee date. You wanna see me over some hot water? Bffr (be for real)," she wrote in Gen Z lingo.

Despite her standing by her proclamation, stating that she would rather have a good date where she can order a full chicken, scores of netizens, including fellow women, differed with her sentiments.

Munene's sentiments were debunked and contradicted by Viral Tea which explained the benefits of coffee dates over dinner dates, for example

Bomet Bride Who Cancelled Wedding Last Minute

Drama ensued countrywide when a 23-year-old woman in Bomet County reportedly cancelled her wedding at the very last minute, requesting more time to make a decision.

The wedding was initially slated to take place at Kapsoiyo Africa Gospel Church (AGC) in Bomet on Saturday, December 9 with Pastor Clement Chalulot expected to preside over the event.

Initial reports depicted in a screenshot from the wedding WhatsApp group claimed that the 23-year-old bride-to-be, Nelly Chepkoech, called off the wedding hours before the D-day, with the pastor informing congregants that attempts to have her reconsider her decision and move ahead with the wedding plans bore no fruit.

Pastor Clement also faulted Chepkoech for refusing to submit her documents to process their marriage certificate. However, the bride set the record straight by revealing that it was the church leadership who urged her to cancel the wedding.

She then dismissed claims that she had abandoned her man by cancelling her wedding, stating that she was at home waiting for what would transpire next. Her man would however turn the saga upside down by revealing that she called off the wedding hours before the D-day as she had disclosed to him that she was seeing another man.

"The wedding could have happened yesterday (Saturday) but the bride revealed that she had another person somewhere. She had not told me about him before. So the wedding did not happen because of what she said," the groom, Amos Rono stated.
