Lawyer and social media personality Maureen Waititu has penned her reaction to the developments surrounding Baby Sagini, a three-year-old boy who had his eyes gouged out by unidentified assailants in Kisii County.

In a statement posted on her Instagram stories on Wednesday, December 21, Waititu prayed for justice to be expedited in the case that has since seen two suspects arrested earlier in the week in connection to the incident.

While expressing her apologies for what Sagini went through, she pleaded with the rest of the political leaders to join forces with former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko in ensuring that Sagini receives the care required.

"Baby Sagini, I pray that justice is served and quickly. I pray that your story of survival from the cruelty you went through will be one that will heal kids from around the world. May God cover you, baby.

"I am so sorry for what you went through. I plead with more leaders and those capable of doing anything for him to join hands with Mike Sonko (bless him) to ensure that the poor baby gets what he needs," she wrote.

She fired a warning shot at those responsible for the atrocious act. Baby Sagini who was said to be playing outside his grandmother’s house was reportedly snatched by the assailants at 6 pm.

He was in the company of other children fetching water when he strayed away, only to be found by his elder brother, who was cutting grass near the scene, writhing in pain the following day.

"May those animals who harmed you meet their rightful fate. I am so mad and so sad to think that anyone can harm an innocent little child for selfish gains.

"May God give your family strength to take good care of you. May the same apply to your big sister. May you both heal and become a success story. My heart bleeds for you. I am so sorry," she concluded.

Sonko has been spearheading efforts to have Baby Sagini flown to South China for advanced treatment, explaining that he had carried out research on the best hospital in the Asian country that would facilitate his eye surgery and found one that specialises in eye implants.

He also disclosed that he contacted the area MP of where the incident took place, Japheth Nyakundi, and the county government of Kisii to facilitate how baby Sagini will be brought to Westlands Laser Eye Hospital in Nairobi for review and recommendations by ophthalmologists and eye specialists.

Additionally, he also intends to engage the Nairobi County Government under Johnson Sakaja to recommend eye specialists from Mbagathi Hospital to also do a separate review of baby Sagini and thereafter forward the two reports to China.

"After which we shall team up and coordinate with leaders from Kisii and fly him to C-MER (Shenzhen) Dennis Lam Eye Hospital in South China for implants that according to the Chinese Doctors would intriguingly help the boy with navigation sensors to allow him to get around on his own in familiar places," Sonko added.

Sagini was reunited with his mother, Maureen Nyaboke, on Wednesday after she was released from police custody. She was allowed to visit her son at the Kisii Eye hospital even as the three-year-old was put under police protection.

The police explained that Baby Sagini and her sister were placed in protective custody in fear for the life of the children given that the incident sparked a nationwide uproar after it was reported on national television. Various reports intimated that the family was transferred to an undisclosed location in Nairobi for fear of possible retaliation from the family.

The mother was released from custody after she was grilled by detectives based in Kisii over her involvement in the matter, including her whereabouts when the incident occurred. According to the police, Nyaboke left the two children at their home as she went to work.

Detectives also stated that they would finalise their preliminary investigations against the two suspects arrested earlier in the week. They would be arraigned before a court of law on Friday, December 23 to take a plea.
