Brian Mwenda, a university student accused of impersonating a lawyer and practising law without the required certifications, appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, October 18.

This was after he was on Tuesday grilled by detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road.

Mwenda was accompanied at the courts by former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko and Kenya Universities Students' Organisation (KUSO) President Antony Manyara, where he is expected to take a plea.

The suspect, who was alleged to have forged his academic papers, had earlier denied the allegations after DCI questioned him for over 10 hours.

Speaking outside the DCI offices, Mwenda called upon his sympathisers and well-wishers to keep supporting him as he awaited the results of the investigations carried out by the DCI and Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

"I cannot disclose much due to the ongoing investigations, but all I can say is maybe this was for a greater purpose. Let's see how it ends, and keep praying for me," Mwenda stated.

He also thanked Kenyans for supporting him, particularly Sonko and Manyara who accompanied him to DCI headquarters as well as Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Kenya) Secretary General Francis Atwoli who stood by Mwenda against accusations by LSK.

After the interrogations, Mwenda recorded a statement at Muthaiga Police Station and was later released on Ksh100,000 bail.

"Brian Mwenda is no longer " an alleged fugitive." He has been released on a police cash bail of Ksh100,000.

"Thanks to DCI Boss, Mr Mohamed Amin and IG Japhet Koome for respecting the rule of law," stated Sonko on Twitter.

The controversial youth who garnered international attention for practising law in court without a valid certificate also declared political ambitions and hinted at contesting for the Maara Constituency Parliamentary seat in 2027.

"I have been helping before even before I became a governor. Brian is a Kenyan and I will be with him till the end. To me he has committed no offence yet, innocent until proven guilty," Sonko further stated.

LSK President Eric Theuri earlier accused Mwenda of impersonating a lawyer, stating that he should be jailed to serve as an example to future masqueraders.

Hours earlier, Mwenda's father, Arnold Njagi, dismissed LSK's claims insisting that he pursued a diploma course in criminology in 2016 which enabled him to join Strathmore University in 2017 and graduate in 2020.

According to Njagi, his son then joined the Kenya School of Law (KSL). After two years, he was admitted to the bar from where he started practising law.

Mwenda is alleged to have appeared in court on many occasions, presenting himself as an advocate of the High Court and is reported to have won all 26 cases that he has argued.
