The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) issued several guidelines on Wednesday, October 18 as well as specific items that will be barred from exam rooms ahead of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations this year.

KNEC in a statement issued the guidelines the candidates expected to sit for this year's national examinations are expected to adhere to, in an attempt to curb cheating during the exams.

The agency is gearing up for supervision of the KCPE and KCSE exams expected to begin on October 30 and October 23 respectively.

The items banned by KNEC include electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, body cameras, smartwatches, earphones, camera pens and any other item with Bluetooth capabilities.

Other banned items include handbags, briefcases, backpacks and kiondos.

Written or printed materials whether or not related to the examinations being done have also been banned. Materials written on items of clothing or footwear will also not be allowed.

KNEC also urged candidates not to wear wristwatches to the examination rooms and not to be in possession of programmable calculators.

Materials written on parts of the body that are not declared tattoos will also not be allowed.

"The grade Y will affect any subsequent certificates, Do Not fall victim to cheating," KNEC cautioned.

In terms of exam guidelines, candidates were advised to maintain their integrity and refrain from sharing exam-related information on social media platforms.

KNEC maintained that it expects candidates to be honest and maintain integrity throughout the course of the exams.

Candidates will also be required to report for their exams on time which will enhance the timeliness and reduce anxiety.

"Dedicate ample time to study and revise thoroughly for success. Use your phone for communication at home but NOT during exams," urged KNEC.

Candidates were also asked to trust that KNEC has diligently prepared and secured the exams.

The KCSE examination begins on October 23, 2023, with the rehearsals slated for Thursday, October 19, while KPSEA, KILEA and KCPE start on October 30, 2023.

This year, a total of 903,260 candidates are registered for the KCSE exam across 10,651 examination/assessment centres.

There are 1,415,315 KCPE candidates across 28,533 centres, while 1,282,574 are registered for KPSEA exam across 32,584 centres.
