Billionaire Chris Kirubi's son-in-law, Andrew Musangi, was on Tuesday, July 4 shortlisted for the position of Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) chairperson.

Musangi, who was the chairman of the Jubilee Party National Elections Board, was listed by the Public Service Commission (PSC) among six candidates for the lucrative position.

The lawyer currently serves as the chairman of the Public Procurement Oversight Authority board which he was appointed to by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021.

Also shortlisted include:

  1. Abdikadir Omar Aden (Former Balambala MP)
  2. John O. Konchellah (Former Principal Secretary for East African Affairs)
  3. James Gituro Wahome
  4. Thomas L. Mwadeghu (Former Wundanyi MP)
  5. James T. Y. Lopoyetum (Former Water Principal Secretary)

Both Abdikadir and Mwadeghu were members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, and thus were Raila's allies in Garissa and Taita Taveta counties, respectively.

The six are set to face the interview panel on Wednesday, July 12, between 9 am to 3 pm. Candidates are required to arrive at least fifteen minutes before their scheduled interview time.

PSC further called on Kenyans with reservations against any of the six candidates to submit their views promptly through the necessary channels.

"Members of the public are invited to avail any credible information of interest relating to any of the shortlisted candidates (through sworn affidavits) to the Secretary/CEO, Public Service Commission, 4th floor Commission House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi or online through [email protected] so as to be received on or before July 10, 2023," read the statement in part.

Shortlisted candidates are required to bring original copies of the following documents for verification:

  1. National Identity Card
  2. Academic and Professional certificates and transcripts
  3. Any other supporting documents and testimonials
  4. Current and Valid Clearances from the following bodies:
  • Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
  • Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
  • A Registered Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)
  • Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) (Police Clearance Certificate)
  • Printed Online Self-declaration Application Acknowledgement Receipt or a Self-Declaration Form duly stamped by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for this job application
  • Letter of recognition of qualifications from the Commission for University Education (CUE) for candidates with degrees from foreign universities
  • Recommendation from relevant professional bodies and associations, if applicable.

The position of CBK chairperson was declared vacant following the departure of Mohammed Nyaoga alongside former governor Patrick Njoroge and his deputy Sheila M'Mbijjewe.

Former Treasury PS Kamau Thugge was chosen as Njoroge's replacement as Susan Koech replaced M'Mbijjewe, both of whom were nominated by President William Ruto and approved by Parliament.

Thugge is the tenth Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya. The Governor is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank and is therefore responsible for its overall management.
