On her social media pages, Kuria announced her new role, expressing her excitement about joining TRT World where she will serve as a news anchor and senior producer.

Her move to TRT World depicts a rising trend of Kenyan journalists transitioning to international media houses. Kuria now joins the likes of Brenda Czeda Radido, another former KTN News anchor, who joined TRT World in March 2024 after five years of service at KTN, and Hope Kirubi, another Kenyan journalist.

On Monday, January 8, sources confirmed to Viral Tea that Kuria was leaving the Cape Media Limited TV station, barely six months after joining from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

About TRT World

TRT World is a Turkish public broadcaster which broadcasts in English 24 hours a day and is operated by the TRT and based in the Ulus quarter of Ankara. It provides worldwide news and current affairs focusing on Turkey, Europe, Africa, and Western and Southern Asia.

In addition to its headquarters based in Ankara, TRT World has broadcasting centres and studios in Washington, D.C. and London. It is a member of the Association for International Broadcasting.

Launched in 2015, TRT World is part of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), Turkey's national public broadcaster, with the network aiming to provide an alternative viewpoint to mainstream Western media, focusing on issues affecting the global south.

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, founded in 1964, had its first TV broadcast in 1968. It is one of the founding members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), joining in 1972.

TRT further expanded its international cooperation by signing the Asia-Pacific Broadcast Union (ABU) agreement in 2004. It currently owns and operates 14 TV channels, five of which are in HD, and 19 radio stations covering general entertainment, music, sports, children’s programming, and news.

The broadcaster offers content in multiple languages, including Turkish, Swahili, English, Arabic, Azeri, and Kurdish.

All TRT channels are governed by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) and adhere to the European Convention on Transfrontier Television.

Criticism

The network has received criticism for failing to meet accepted journalism ethics and standards for independence and objectivity, with some commentators especially in the West calling it a mouthpiece or propaganda arm of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's regime

TRT World claims that it is financially and editorially independent from the administration and that its news gathering and reporting activities are just like those of other publicly funded broadcasters around the world, with a mission to show non-Turkish audience events from Turkey's viewpoint.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Turkey in 2023 ranked 165th out of 180 countries in press freedom.
