Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday, June 4 uncovered little-known details regarding how a video by popular Kenyan entertainer, DJ Brownskin, born Michael Macharia Njiiri of his wife committing suicide went viral.

The DCI's report emerged after the DJ was arrested on Thursday, June 1 after avoiding summons by police to record a statement in relation to the death of his wife, Sharon Njeri, 33, who died between the nights of July 29 and 30, 2022.

The DJ had been summoned by detectives to shed more light on the death of Njeri, who ingested poison as he recorded on a device in between those nights.

DCI, however, did not disclose whether DJ Brownskin shared the information during grilling or was discovered by forensic experts as part of the evidence accrued.

"In a heart-wrenching videotape released by a popular blogger on April 1, 9 months after Njeri’s remains had been buried, her last moments were filmed by the DJ as she emptied a poisonous substance into a cup and ingested without hesitation.

"She then slumped on a couch and called her two children to inform them of her impending death. The mother of two collapsed and died shortly thereafter. She was buried at her parents' home in Koimbe Weithaga village, Murang’a County, on August 6 last year," stated the DCI.

The sleuths determined that the entertainer had shared the horrific video with his other girlfriend residing in another country, who in turn forwarded it to the blogger who published the clip on social media.

"Detectives have since established that after recording the ordeal, the suspect sent the video to his other girlfriend living abroad before the girlfriend went public with the information through the blogger," added the DCI.

Efforts to summon the DJ to shed more light into the incident, the DCI added, proved futile, as he remained elusive prompting detectives to launch a manhunt leading to his arrest on Madaraka Day, moments past midnight.

The suspect is currently being held at Kasarani police as detectives gather more information from witnesses, to build a strong case against the suspect. He will be charged with the offence of aiding suicide and failing to prevent the same contrary to Section 225 (C) of the Penal Code.

Constable Wicks Lumumba of Kasarani DCI offices obtained an order from the Makadara magistrate's court to hold him for seven days to complete investigations.

In an affidavit filed before Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga on Friday, June 2, Lumumba revealed that Njeri died by suicide with the help of Njiiri. She was captured by Njiiri in the video consuming poison.

The detective stated that Njiiri failed to prevent the commission of the said offence which led to the death of Njeri, adding that Njiiri had been summoned three times by the DCI to appear and shed light on the matter but he refused and evaded police dragnets until he was traced and arrested.

Lumumba revealed that he needed time to locate the parents of the deceased and record their statements on the incident.

He further noted that the celebrity was a flight risk as he had been on the run from January 2023 to June 1, adding that investigators need time to gather vital evidence, which is believed to be scattered.

Lumumba further noted that the entertainer was required to assist in the reconstruction of the crime scene and the collection of evidence.

The DCI officer sought permission from the court to detain DJ Brownskin for 14 days, but Judge Mutunga only granted him seven days after the application was opposed by DJ Brownskin's lawyers led by Elisha Ndemo.
