The family of the late Brenda Kawira, a 29-year-old woman who jumped to her death from the fourth floor of her apartment in Kasarani, Nairobi stated that she left behind a diary depicting the details of her relationship with her 30-year-old boyfriend, John Marvin Kiretai, alias DJ Dela.

The diary which was on Wednesday, March 22 seized as evidence by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had indicated that the late Kawira had reportedly “poured her feelings about the violent nature of the relationship, infidelity, and expressed regret for ever meeting him.”

At the time of her demise, after she allegedly jumped off the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment building in Ngumba Estate, Kasarani, on February 22, 2023, she was in the house with DJ Dela, who initially revealed that he and Kawira had moved to the bedroom at around 11.30 pm where her mood changed.

She left the room and went to the balcony, and it was at this point that the DJ heard a loud thud, which prompted him to check the sitting room, kitchen and the other rooms in the house to find out where Kawira was.

He told police that he then decided to look for her on the balcony only to be shocked to see her on the ground floor. He rushed to the ground floor and sought neighbours for help, afterwhich the woman was rushed to Uzima Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

It was then that police were called to the hospital while her body was still in the backseat of a personal car.

“Physical examination deduced visible injuries and bruises on her face,” the police incident report indicated.

Police who visited the hospital found Kawira dead with visible injuries. According to the police, the deceased had bruises on her right thigh, her neck, left cheek and lower limb, with a subsequent autopsy report revealing that the cause of death was internal bleeding.

However, Kawira's family dismissed the initial suicide claims and together with her friends, claimed that DJ Dela should be arrested for her death, believing that he should be investigated further while alleging that he was the last person to see her alive.

They disputed the police's conclusion that Kawira committed suicide, alleging that DJ Dela’s clothes, the door handle, walls, and the mat were all bloody and that the balcony window was broken.

“The DJ has given contradicting accounts so far on what transpired and he should be arrested as he is the last person who saw Brenda alive," a statement released by the deceased's friends read, which also questioned the nature of the injuries she sustained as recorded in the police report.

Kawira, a medical biochemist, was excited about her upcoming departure to Australia for her Master’s program in June 2023. Born on Jan 3, 1994, in a family of a Catholic priest, Peter Gitonga and Mama Catherine Gakii, Kawira had three brothers and two sisters.

She schooled in Nkubu Primary School between 1997 and 2006 before she proceeded to St Mary's Igoji Secondary School from 2007 to 2010. In September 2021, the late Kawira graduated with first-class honours from the University of Nairobi where she was pursuing a degree in medical biochemistry specialising to become a geneticist.

She had briefly worked as a Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry teacher at Kaanwa and Marimanti girls' secondary schools before she moved to a Nairobi-based pharmaceutical company where she was working till she met her death.

Witnesses who spoke to the police also stated that the DJ never moved an inch when Kawira fell, and it took him almost ten minutes before deciding to rush her to the hospital.

The late Kawira's family and friends urged the DCI to update them on the investigation’s status and ensure that justice is served, adding that they want the case to be thoroughly investigated and the necessary action taken.

The report also revealed that Kawira had expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of her relationship with her boyfriend before her alleged suicide.

DJ Dela has been in the entertainment industry for years and has even been featured in several TV programs. According to his Instagram profile seen by Viral Tea, he is the founder of an entertainment company and runs a podcast.

His social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, did not have any messages of condolence for the deceased with spot checks on his Twitter account showing the normal activity of posting and retweeting several posts.

One Instagram post that however caught our eye was posted by DJ Dela on his account on July 17, 2022, showing him with a woman during a beach vacation. By the time of publishing, Viral Tea was unable to independently verify if the woman was the late Kawira.
