Car brands Toyota and Mercedes as well as Arimis, Samsung and the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) featured prominently among the 100 most loved brands by women in Kenya - according to a study released on Tuesday, March 21.

According to the third edition of the survey by IPSOS Kenya, titled Top 100 Most Loved Brands by Women in Kenya, Toyota was the 20th most-loved car brand countrywide as Mercedes came a distant 54th.

The study done by the Brand Strategy management (BSD) Group in collaboration with IPSOS also showed that Arimis was the 19th most beloved brand countrywide - a drop from last year's ranking that placed the petroleum jelly in the top 10.

Arimis is derived from a Meru name 'Arimi' meaning farmer. From the name, the original idea was to help the farmers in milking the cow hence the company branded the product with a photo of a cow.

The top five list was dominated by two local telecommunication companies as well as a local bank, a mobile money platform and a supermarket.

In the top 10, NHIF emerged as the surprise pick in the list amidst incoming reforms by President William Ruto's government, including a change of name to the National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF).

Samsung emerged as the most popular smartphone brand in the country as it continues to rival the likes of Apple's iPhone in manufacturing and exporting sleek smartphones to the country and selling them at affordable prices, boosted by the wide range of phones catering to all Kenyans.

Out of the list of 100 brands, 22 of their favourite brands and products fall in the cleanliness and beauty segment while a total of 12 hospitals appear. The domination of the two categories of brands is an indication of the consumer focus of the Kenyan woman and reflects growing industries in the health and beauty sectors.

Speaking during the ceremony, Eva Muraya, the founder of BSD Group, detailed that at least 70 per cent of decisions made in households were influenced by women and that some of the areas of concern that ought to be addressed included the high cost of living.

“The study has gained interest from cooperate organisations, policymakers and development partners, a clear indication that there was a purpose and meaning in making women be the forefront of decision-making processes. The data that is gathered is crucial in determining the future of Kenya and the region,” she noted.

The study also detailed that because women were in charge of managing the home finances, they were affected by the high cost of living forcing them to opt for cheaper household products.

“We see that the woman is stretching her dollar which as a result is impacting some of the historical brand leaders. We have seen a significant increase in poor economic empowerment affecting women who are 35 years and above,” noted the senior research manager at IPSOS, Koi Kariuki.

She also raised the issue of inequality in the workplace in companies across the country especially in terms of onboarding, explaining that some companies hire men because they feel that if they hire women, they will get pregnant and ask for leave.
