The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved terrorism charges against two allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Peter Kawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga have been accused of causing extensive damage to government offices in Kikuyu.

The charges brought to court by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions claimed that the two suspects damaged not just the law courts but also other nearby government facilities.

According to a charge sheet obtained by Viral Tea, "PETER KINYANJUI WANJIRU Alias KAWANJIRU, SERAH WANJIKU THIGA : On the 25th day of June, 2025 between 1200 hours and 2300 hours in Kikuyu area within Kiambu County, you and others before court, committed a terrorist act which resulted to serious damage to Government Offices and Buildings."

"To wit Kikuyu Probation offices, Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu Sub-County Offices, Kikuyu Chief's Office, Kikuyu Registrar of Persons' Offices, Sub-County Education Office, Sub-County Accountant's Office, Kikuyu Registrar of Lands Offices, Dagoretti Police Post and Kikuyu Deputy County Commissioners' Office among others, the property of the Kenyan Government."

On July 1, Kawanjiru, the DCP Youth leader, was seized from his home at night by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations as his family looked on.

According to relatives, the officers — dressed in civilian clothes — stormed their Limuru home around 8:30 p.m., broke down doors, and ransacked the house while demanding to take him into custody.

Witnesses and family members recounted that more than 10 vehicles surrounded the area, followed shortly by a power outage, loud banging, gunfire, and chaos.

Four days later, Kawanjiru was brought before the court. But even after the court ordered his release, chaos broke out outside the Ruiru Courts in Kiambu County when anti-terror police rearrested him. He had just been freed on bond and was leaving for home when the scene turned chaotic.

Videos obtained by Viral Tea showed anti-terror police forcibly shoving Kawanjiru into a moving van as gunshots rang out. Supporters and family tried to block the re-arrest with loud protests, but the police still managed to whisk him away.

Meanwhile, Wanjiku took to X on Tuesday, July 1, to report that unknown individuals had abducted her at Kamakis, a popular stopover along both Thika Road and the Eastern Bypass, with questions raised on how such a brazen act could occur amidst high human traffic.

Wanjiku, who has lately been outspoken on political and national issues, was abducted — an incident that has heightened concerns about the safety of young, politically engaged leaders in the country.
