Officers drawn from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) were filmed assaulting Osinde Obare, a journalist attached to the Standard Group Limited.

Obare was reported to have been tipped off regarding the arrest of a traffic police officer found taking bribes from motorists on Kitale-Kapenguria road, an incident which Obare was determined to record.

However, the officers were irked by his move to take photos and videos of the arrest and actively blocked him from doing so, though taking their habits too far.

Here is the video:

The officers were further rattled by his defiance and threatened to keep coming at him with hostility if he did not desist.

“Introduce yourself first, you can not record us, I don't know you,” claimed one of the officers.

The scuffle led to an exchange of words between the EACC detectives and the journalist, to which Obare was not happy about. He also questioned why they turned their attention toward him instead of focusing on arresting the traffic officer.

Before the confrontation, the journalist could be seen interacting with some of the officers, but matters escalated during the casual conversation.

Initially, the officers could be heard warning him against taking photos and recording videos, the officers then quickly notified their colleagues who confronted the journalist.

Scuffles between law enforcement officers and journalists are not uncommon, with the latter having to suffer the brunt of the former.

A raid that was mounted on Friday, January 5 by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) targeting a popular Nairobi nightclub located in Kilimani turned hostile as journalists drawn from several media houses were injured after being assaulted.

Speaking to Viral Tea, a contact at NACADA confirmed the assault, which saw journalists drawn from the Nation Media Group (NMG), Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and Standard Group Limited attacked by the club's bouncers, dressed in black suits and red ties.

In another incident on September 20, 2023, a female police officer was captured harassing journalists who were deployed to cover protests at Lang'ata Cemetery, one of the largest burial sites in Nairobi, whose workers staged a strike over delayed salaries.

The officer was captured in blue uniform telling off journalists who were deployed to cover the protests, threatening them with consequences if they failed to keep her off the cameras.
