The Ministry of Health has listed a series of advisories to Kenyans with the festive season getting underway and with two days to Christmas Day on December 25 when Kenyans are expected to converge and make merry.

In a statement released on Monday, December 23, Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni called on all Kenyans to embrace safety measures that will safeguard their health and well-being during this celebratory period. "This is a time to connect with loved ones, but it is also essential to remain vigilant against potential risks to ensure a safe and joyous season for everyone," she stated in part.

To maintain food safety and hygiene, the Ministry deemed it crucial to observe strict cleanliness when preparing meals. This means washing hands frequently with soap and running water, and ensuring all food is cooked thoroughly and served hot.

Kenyans were further urged to refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat them properly before consuming and to avoid eating meat that has not been inspected by certified officers or sourced from dead animals. Furthermore, you are asked to keep raw and cooked foods separate to prevent contamination and use clean, treated, or boiled water for cooking and drinking.

The Ministry also touched on the importance of road safety as a shared responsibility during the holidays, calling on Kenyans to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and take regular breaks on long journeys to prevent fatigue.

"Always wear seatbelts, and ensure children are secured in appropriate car seats. Observe traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and prioritize the safety of other road users. Planning routes in advance can also help avoid traffic congestion," added the statement.

The government also advised on heightened personal safety and security during public gatherings, with Kenyans asked to stay alert in crowded areas and keep their belongings secure. Emergency contacts should be easily accessible, and fireworks should be handled responsibly, with children supervised at all times.

At any hosted events, Kenyans were urged to ensure proper sanitary facilities, including handwashing stations and latrines. Those with ongoing medical needs, such as diabetes, HIV, or TB, should carry adequate medication to last throughout the holiday period.

To prevent the spread of diseases, Kenyans were also urged to stay hydrated and protect themselves from extreme weather conditions. "Practice respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wear masks in crowded indoor spaces if necessary," added the statement.

"Sleep under treated mosquito nets to avoid malaria, and practice safe sex or abstain altogether. If you feel unwell, seek medical attention promptly."

Muthoni further outlined the importance of mental health and wellness during the festivities, and Kenyans have been recommended to balance their social commitments to avoid stress and ensure they get sufficient rest, with at least eight hours of sleep daily.

You have also been asked to stay physically active and avoid excessive alcohol consumption or smoking. Respect others' choices regarding alcohol, and stay connected with family and friends to nurture emotional well-being.

Finally, the Ministry emphasized the importance of water safety for those planning activities near water bodies.

"Always supervise children around pools, rivers, or beaches, and avoid swimming alone or under the influence of alcohol. Check weather conditions before engaging in water activities, and use appropriate safety equipment to reduce risks," added the statement.
