Five people have been shot dead by police officers in the Angata Barikoi area in Kilgoris, Narok County.

Reports are suggesting a bitter row over 6,300 acres of land in the area. The individuals killed on Monday afternoon, April 28, were said to have been resisting land grabbing by a powerful politician from the region.

It is reported that the five were shot during a confrontation between police officers and locals. Videos seen by Viral Tea revealed gunshots ringing in the air and loud screams as residents fled to escape the officers.

Residents, including women, were heard wailing and shouting, accusing General Service Unit (GSU) officers of carrying out the shooting.

The deadly clash broke out as locals protested the arrival of government officials who had come to demarcate the disputed land.

Tensions quickly escalated when residents blocked roads and confronted security forces, prompting a violent police response that resulted in multiple deaths.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina reacted to the news of the killings and sent his condolences to those affected, further assuring them that no land grabbing would take place under his watch.

Olekina further promised to visit the area for a fact-finding mission regarding the situation. He is known for his hard stance on communal land.

''I am deeply saddened by the reported news of the killings in Angata Barikoi. My heartfelt condolences to all affected. I want to assure you that no one can take your land from you. As your Senator, I stand firmly with you in this difficult time.

"I will visit the area soon to gain a better understanding of the situation and offer my support. Once again, my sincere condolences," he wrote on X.

Narok Deputy Governor Tomalinye Koech also confirmed the incident but withheld additional information, citing an ongoing investigation.

Earlier in March, residents of Angata Barikoi had staged protests over allegations that the accused leader was attempting to seize their land. However, Viral Tea was unable to independently confirm the rightful ownership of the disputed land at the time of reporting.

Moreover, both the police and local authorities had yet to issue any official updates regarding the standoff and the shooting of the five individuals by the time this story was published.

In October 2024, security was heightened in the Angata Barikoi area of Trans Mara South Sub-County after sporadic clashes between two rival communities living along the Narok-Migori county border.

During a visit to the area, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan reported that the violence at the time left four people dead, ten others injured, and several acres of maize farms destroyed.

He attributed the conflict to competition over farmland and grazing spaces, as both communities rely heavily on livestock and crop farming.
