Families of Gen Z protesters who lost their lives during the June 25, 2024, demonstrations have formally notified the Central Police Station of their intention to hold a peaceful march in their memory.

Joined by prominent activists, the families said they plan to hold the procession on June 25, 2025, heading to the Office of the President and Parliament to honour those who died while protesting the Finance Bill 2024.

They emphasised that the event will be a non-violent demonstration. Participants are expected to lay flowers outside Parliament, where many of the victims lost their lives, as a symbolic tribute to their memory.

“Families of victims of comrades who were killed during GenZ protests last year are at Central Police Station to issue a notice to police for a peaceful march on 25th June 2025,” read a statement by Hussein Khalid, one of the activists who accompanied them to the station.

Alongside laying flowers and lighting candles, the families also plan to present a memorandum for justice—a written document outlining their grievances and demands.

The memo will detail what went wrong during the protests, call for investigations, demand accountability from those involved, and suggest steps to prevent future tragedies.

Among those who went to Central Police Station to submit the notice were Gillian Munyao, mother of Rex Masai, and other parents who lost their children during the peaceful June 2024 demonstrations.

Activist Boniface Mwangi, who accompanied them, claimed that officers at the station were unwilling to receive the notice and called on Kenyans to stand in solidarity.

"They’re there to notify police of the June 25, 2025, remembrance protest. Police are refusing to accept the letter. Media & solidarity needed," he wrote on X.

Several opposition leaders have urged the government to declare June 25 a public holiday to honour the youths who lost their lives.

But government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura rejected the proposal, instead advising Kenyans to disregard the calls and carry on with their usual economic activities.

“We have heard people say June 25 will be a public holiday. There is no public holiday on June 25. It is a working day if it falls on a weekday," Mwaura said.
