Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will address a public rally at the Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi, a landmark in Kenya's political history that has been famous with leaders such as Raila Odinga. This has been announced by the Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP).

DCP Party Leader Cleophas Malala announced this on Monday, August 18, adding that this will be part of a packed schedule by the former DP once he returns to Kenya from the United States (US).

Malala revealed that Gachagua will make a procession from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) then to Kamukunji Grounds for the rally.

Thousands of supporters are anticipated to take part in a grand procession to welcome the former Deputy President back from his trip to the United States. Speaking at a press briefing, Malala said crowds from across the country would gather at JKIA at 8 a.m. to receive him.

He added that once the former DP arrives, the supporters will stage what he described as “a mother of all peaceful processions” from JKIA to Nairobi’s CBD. Malala added that he Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has been informed about the gathering.

"Last week, we announced that our party leader will return to the nation on Thursday, and we want to confirm that his return is still as scheduled. We call the people of Kenya to show up at JKIA to receive him, where we shall have a mother of all peaceful processions upon his arrival," Malala said.

"The procession will begin from JKIA to the Central Business District and later address a public rally at the Kamukunji grounds. The police are hereby notified to provide security, and they should not dare to disrupt the processions," he added.

Malala further claimed that there are plans to divert Gachagua’s flight to either Moi International Airport in Mombasa or Kisumu International Airport in order to arrest him.

He, however, assured that the party has mobilized Gachagua’s supporters in both regions to remain vigilant and turn up at the airports to block any attempt at his detention.

"Take notice that any attempts to arrest His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua once he lands in the country will be met by our supporters across the country. We remember when His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua was impeached. He implored his supporters to remain calm and resort to singing. This time round, the song will be of a different rhythm," he warned.

In a Monday morning interview, Malala cautioned that arresting Gachagua on Thursday could spark demonstrations from his supporters, posing a risk of disrupting the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

He further argued that detaining Gachagua while Kenya is under the global spotlight for hosting the tournament would damage President William Ruto’s image on the international stage.
