Machakos County Governor, Wavinya Ndeti, on Saturday, August 12 issued a statement regarding three separate accidents that occurred along Mombasa Road in a matter of hours.

In the statement, Ndeti gave an account of one of the accidents involving an oil tanker which occurred near Mto wa Mawe along the busy inter-county road.

"Early Saturday evening at around 1830 hrs, the Machakos County Emergency Control Centre received a distress call from members of the public reporting a Road Traffic Accident near Mto wa Mawe along Mombasa Road.

"An oil tanker reportedly lost control and overturned on the road, causing a massive oil spill at the scene," she revealed.

The Governor noted that the nearby Emergency Response Teams as well as the fire and rescue teams were mobilised, with police from Kyumvi police station and ambulance services further deployed to fully contain the incident.

She also gave an account of two other accidents that occurred on the same day, leaving 32 people hospitalised.

"In addition, my office also takes note of two other accidents that occurred on the same day, on the same road near the Kyumvi Junction in the Nairobi general direction. Specifically, one involving a minibus and a Lorry at the Kyumvi Junction on the way to Nairobi, and the other, still on the highway.

"Our officers were able to successfully evacuate a total of 32 survivors who were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital Casualty," she added.

Ndeti went on to report that health personnel revealed that the majority of the survivors suffered soft tissue injuries, with five (5) of them having required an x-ray, debridement, or stitching.

Fortunately, from the three road accidents, no fatalities were reported, with Ndeti showing appreciation to the county emergency team and hospital staff for their efficient and timely response.

"I commend the first responders, Machakos County emergency team, and hospital staff at Machakos level 5 for their speedy and efficient response. We are still on standby at the scene to mobilize, and deploy more resources should the need arise.

"I assure the people of Machakos County and the families of those affected by these accidents that we will do everything in our power to ensure that the injured receive the best care possible. I wish all the survivors a quick recovery," she concluded.

NTSA Accident Statistics

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that during the period between January to June 24, 2023, Kenya witnessed a total of 2,124 road fatalities.

Out of these fatalities, 729 individuals were pedestrians, while 561 were motorcyclists. 

Additionally, the data indicated that 403 passengers lost their lives, alongside 196 pillion passengers and 189 drivers, all as a result of road accidents. The remaining casualties were pedal cyclists.
