UPDATE: Activist Boniface Mwangi, and Hussein Khalid of Haki Africa, have been arrested. The duo were arrested during a march to honour the fallen heroes of the protests.

While confirming his arrest, Mwangi’s lawyer revealed the activist was arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, as well as Khalid. This is the same police post where social media personality, Shad Khalif was earlier taken to.

Mwangi was reportedly arrested by police officers while protesting at the Kenyatta Market in Nairobi.

Social media personality Shadrack Kiprono, popularly known as Shad Khalif, has reported that he has been arrested.

Shad took to his X account on Thursday, June 25 stating "I’ve been arrested I’m being taken to Kamukunji police."

Before the post, he shared a photo showing individuals in hoodies crossing Kimathi Street in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) on their way to a coffee restaurant to arrest him.

Nation Media Group's (NMG) Managing Editor-Newsroom Production, James Smart, also confirmed by revealing the individuals he stated were police officers had arrested Shad and a security guard inside the restaurant.

Haki Africa Executive Director, Hussein Khalid also reported that the unknown men picked up the social media personality and escorted him into a waiting police car on the street.

Another post Shad had shared showed a selfie of him as he revealed that he was waiting to be booked at Central Police Station.

X user Ms Wega posted that "They have switched off his phone and MOVED him to an unknown location. He was taken in a Subaru Forester."

The reasons for his arrest by the time of publishing this story are yet to be established. Authorities are also yet to comment on the matter.

Notably, on Sunday, June 23, Shad was abducted in Nairobi's South B area. CCTV footage shared all over social media platforms and captured from a restaurant, showed normalcy when Shad, who appeared to be dressed in a white hoodie, was seen walking towards a vehicle.

Unbeknownst to him, a white Toyota Prado was parked right next to the vehicle he went to. Before he could head back, out burst a group of two men who grabbed him, a third one joining in restraining him.

As the commotion drew the attention of the restaurant and passers-by along the street, Shad was seen being bundled into the white Prado which was then seen turning to its right and driving away.

Initial reports claimed that he was abducted by suspected undercover detectives. Shad has been passionately involved in the Gen Z-led anti-Finance Bill protests.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemned the abduction and called for his immediate release, with its President, Faith Odhiambo, stating "This was not an arrest as the police did not identify themselves or engage in any conversation before the arrest to inform him of his rights."
