Police have launched investigations into the death of a 28-year-old woman who jumped off her third-floor apartment balcony in Lang'ata, Nairobi.

According to a police report obtained by Viral Tea, the woman identified as Nelvin Museti was found lying dead at the back of the apartment block after she was believed to have jumped on Sunday, January 14 at around 5.50 am.

The report added that the late Museti was living alone in the apartment, with its caretaker being the first to report the matter to the police.

"Scene visited by the deputy OCS, duty officer and DCI Lang'ata and the body of one Nelvin Museti aged 28 years was found lying dead at the back of the said apartments about 1.5km north of the station," read the report in part.

During the wee hours when the incident occurred, neighbours were alerted by a loud thud and surrounded the scene before the police arrived.

"The scene has been processed by crime scene personnel and the body which had no physical injury but blood oozing from the nose has been moved to the city mortuary awaiting post-mortem and further police action," added the report, with the police treating the incident as a case of suspected suicide.

On social media, Museti's last post was on Facebook on November 8, 2023, where she wrote "Grateful" as a caption in one of her photos.

The incident was the first in 2024 and came after a string of similar cases that dominated news headlines in 2023.

Joseph Kubende, Elizabeth Wanjiru Githinji, Brenda Kawira, Blair Muthomi and Jeff Mwathi all fell to their deaths from the apartment, with the latter, being the most significant, seeing DJ Fatxo cleared of murder charges despite opposition from the deceased's family.

The chain of events involving victims falling from residential apartments saw residential areas such as Kasarani and Roysambu gaining notoriety, with the only one occurring outside the two areas seeing the death of Catherine Njeri, a 23-year-old student from the Kenya Institute of Management, in Gacharage, Ruaka.

The incident saw five people arrested in connection with Njeri's death after she allegedly fell from the seventh floor, the only time such a case has involved arrests.

Cases of suicides and murder have been on the rise in the recent months. The year 2023 saw 10 suicide cases affecting Kiambu alone in just 10 months, raising concerns.

A report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) released on August 2023 indicated that a majority of the cases were caused by unemployment, the high cost of living and alcoholism.

Psychiatrists responded by launching counselling programmes to prevent further loss of lives.
