The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned residents of Imara Daima Estate in Nairobi of a closure of a vital road that connects them to the busy Mombasa Road.

KeNHA in its traffic advisory revealed that the closure commenced on Monday, September 25 and will run until Monday, October 2.

The roads set to be targeted by the temporary closure include a section of the Tegla Lorupe Road, Moses Tanui Road Junction (Tuffsteel) and the Cosmas Ndeti Road Junction.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the Public that there will be a temporary closure of a section of the Tegla Lorupe Road between Moses Tanui Road junction (Tuffsteel) and Cosmas Ndeti Road junction from 25th September 2023 to 2nd October 2023, all days inclusive," stated KeNHA in part.

The Authority explained that the closure is to allow for the construction of a cross culvert to collect stormwater from Mombasa Road to solve the perennial flooding at the location.

This move is in response to the El Nino rains which are expected from October to December 2023 and set to affect Nairobi and major cities in Kenya including Mombasa, Nakuru and Naivasha as well as various parts of the country.

Motorists accessing Imara Daima and adjacent Estates are therefore advised to turn right to Moses Tanui Road junction at Tuffsteel behind Imara Daima Mall, head straight and turn left to Cosmas Ndeti Road.

"Motorists are also advised to approach the section with caution and to follow the traffic signs and guidance as directed by traffic Marshall and Police," added KeNHA.

The closure is anticipated to disrupt normal operations as well as lead to congestion along the major roads, especially for Imara Daima residents getting home from work.

Nonetheless, the authority in recent weeks has been constructing and improving drainage systems along various roads and highways in Nairobi in anticipation of the rains.

El Niño is characterised by above-average warming of the ocean surface in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, and during this period east winds blow weaker than normal.

The phenomenon typically occurs every 3 to 5 years and causes excess rainfall and flooding in the East Africa region.
