President William Ruto and Raila Odinga personally called the late Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo Ojwang, to eulogise with his family following his son's tragic death.

Meshack made the revelation on Monday, May 16, after returning to his hometown of Homa Bay in Lida Village after spending a week in Nairobi, where he had gone to follow up on his son's case, only to later receive news of his death.

Ojwang was confirmed dead on Saturday, June 8, in a case that has triggered a series of developments, including direct involvement by the president.

Expressing his appreciation to President Ruto, Meshack shared that he felt honoured to receive a personal phone call from the Head of State, who, he says, showed genuine sympathy following the loss of his son.

“As I mentioned earlier, by taking my son Albert as his own son, and feeling something — because many have passed away — Because he chose to take on this burden as his own so he could express condolences through my phone, I am grateful for that,” he said.

He also shared that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, though abroad at the time, made the effort to call him and offer his condolences.

Meshack further mentioned that Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga had reached out to him multiple times and continued to follow up regularly, even while he was in Nairobi searching for answers about his son’s death. He expressed gratitude for her visits to their home and her ongoing support.

“Raila Odinga, who is also our elder, took the opportunity to call me while he was abroad. We spoke, and he offered me his condolences. Also, Mama Gladys Wanga has been coming home, and even before that, she had been checking on me regularly, asking how I was doing in Nairobi — we’ve been in touch. Dr. Eve Obara has also stood by me and continues to ask if there’s anything she can help with,” he added.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has since visited the late Ojwang’s father at his home, revealing that in addition to a phone call, President Ruto had also offered the family financial support totalling Ksh2 million.

Raila Odinga, also the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), contributed Ksh1 million in support. At the same time, the Homa Bay County government announced plans to build a two-bedroom house for Ojwang’s family, estimated to cost Ksh1.5 million.

On Sunday, the late Ojwang’s wife received a major boost when Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja offered her a permanent, pensionable job.

Governor Wanga had earlier pledged to mobilise friends to help buy land in Homa Bay and develop rental units for Ojwang’s parents as a source of steady income.

Meanwhile, as the family continues to seek justice and closure, Monday saw fresh developments in the murder case, including Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat stepping aside to pave the way for thorough investigations.
